propane VS wood....
so im getting to damm old to cut/split/lug wood...
anyone change there cabins from a wood heater stove to propane??
whats a average price to buy and hook up a propane heater to heat a cabin about 16 x24......not looking for a top of line furnace, just something to keep out the dampness

"...change there..." Change where?
"...getting to damm old to..." You need a lackey.
Weekend only use or full time? You looking for a regular furnace or a space heater? How do you plan on filling the tank? Are you thinking DIY bottles or a service like Superior Propane? Superior would need road access to the tank.
I'd be thinking a portable space heater for a building that big myself. $50 will buy one in Crappy Tire. Assuming it's only for weekends.

mostly week end use..i can get filled 100 lb tanks through work at company pricing

Wood in our camp is free, propane for fridge and stove is hard enough and too $$$$$ to boat in. Where's the young members to cut wood?

I have a woodstove as main source, but also put in a direct vent forced air 45K propane shop furnace from princess auto for back up, quick initial cabin heat up and the times I am plain too lazy to get more wood. The propane comes via 100lb tank that I fill at Costco for $45 and will give around 50 hours burn time(in a well insulated cabin that is quite a bit for intermittent use), the electricity to run the fan comes from a modest solar panel(90 watts) battery setup. The 16x32 1 1/2 story cabin is used on weekends pretty much year round. That 100 lb tank will last me most of the winter with intermittent use. If I used propane as primary heat 100lbs might only last 20-25 days during an average winter.

As far as cost, I think princess sells this furnace around 500-600 clams during heating season but often marks them down at the end. I got mine for $350 including the horizontal or vertical install 3 inch double wall b-vent kit, spent a couple more hundred on a thermostat, two stage regulator, black pipe and misc wiring stuff. I did the install myself, it was reasonably easy. It comes with detailed general approved code instructions. Probably most important part is leak check you pipe connections, otherwise it's hard to screw up. Total install including wiring, regulator,20 feet of black pipe and out the wall horizontal vent took maybe the better part of a Saturday. I also optionally installed a cold air intake as this furnace is not sealed combustion and will use your inside air for combustion. As such a CO detector is not a bad idea.

As far as performance , for the size of cabin we are taking about that has reasonable insulation the 45000 input btus of this furnace(actual output btu is 36000 at rated 81% efficiency) is more than enough and will give a 10 degree rise in 15-20 minutes. Way faster than the woodstove. I love it for cold arrivals. I normally crank up both the wood stove and furnace when I arrive in a severly cold soaked cabin and can take my jacket off in 20-30 minutes and then let the woodstove take over from there. Now if it was only the wood stove it would take a 1-2 hours to just start feeling warm. I also don't have to worry about waking in the middle of the night to stoke the woodstove as the thermostat will automatically call for heat as appropriate. I personally don't care about getting a little cold overnight but the spouse sure does. :)

Northerntool also sells this furnace check out their predominantly positive customer reviews. They also sell a non electrice direct vent wall mounted furnace that heats by convection but again you loose out on the quick temp rises without a fan to move the hot air around.

I have both, but my wood stove is small, so the propane just keeps the heat up when I'm not around or too lazy to use wood and don't worry about getting up in the middle of the night. I bought a ventless propane heater from the US and it works great, but does put a little more moisture into the cabin. I run it for a week of deer season on 3 x 30lb propane tanks. That is pretty cheap if you ask me for the convenience, but would be expensive if it was full time. The way it is, its $15 bucks for each guy in camp to cover all the propane.

As I grew older and weaker fortunately my sons grew bigger and stronger :)_....so chopping and burning continues.

I'd sure miss the smell of that wood fire. And the rifle season opens Monday morning.

Here in BC, there is so much standing dead pine [pine beetle devastation] that it would be a sacrilege to use anything but wood to heat the cabin. We have a big RSF Energy stove that will hold a fire for a long time. We'll keep on using wood for the forseeable future. Eagleye.

"...mostly week end...can get filled 100 lb tanks..." Crappy Tire space heater. I think the connectors are the same as a 25 lb tank. Longer hoses aren't terribly expensive.
"...What about a diesel heater?..." Fuel's too expensve and smelly.

Only smelly if you slop it around. We used an oil heater for years and that thing would put out plenty of heat. 20 litres of diesel would last 3 days, as you don't need to run it full out during the day.

Just come over to my camp. We have lots of wood. All the deer are there too! There is a guy in the ee of all other stuff. He has a propane house stove. Or atleast he did. I almost bought it for the garage. $200. He is in beaverton. His name is jansey, i think. If you end up buying it. I can go pick it up and drop it off at your camp for you, if you want.

Dave.

Thank you PM Harper for the Home Renovation Tax Credit!

The camp boss had his home furnace replaced last year and asked the installer to give him a call if a smallish propane home furnace became available from another customer upgrading to a newer unit.
A month later the gentleman contacted him and gave us a free five year old forced air furnace from a small house. A member of the camp is a HVAC installer, a few bucks on parts and about 2 hours work and now we're good to go!
Every time I miss the ambience of the old woodstove I pull up a cot close to warm duct and catch a relaxing snooze...

My father in law rigged up a wood burning stove out of a 10 gallon propane container. Kept us very warm and cozy hunting up north this year.
