I fairly new to PR, Im using a 700 20" barrel with a 10 to 1 twist in .308W. Currently I'm using 168 A-Max with Winchester brass and Varget powder. My rifle seems to like a 2.800 OAL and 45.2 gr of powder. Most of my shooting is done at 100-200m but I want to try some 600-1000m this summer. With my short barrel and 10-1 twist would a heavier bullet like a 178 A-Max be more ideal? I have been reading that the 208 A-Max requires to much powder to get to a good velocity to be ideal in 308W. I would like to stay with the varget powdered as I have 5 pounds of it and it seems to by readily availible locally. Thanks

With my 20in accsd I got a 208 amax pushed to 2600. Seated it long with rl15. Got it out to 1250 yards. It can be done.

Using a 170gr+ bullet seems to be best suited for 308win past the 700-800 yard point. Sometimes a 168 is going to slide poorly past the trans sonic range and tumble if you can't get her fast enough.

Wow varget readily avalible. 168 will make 1000. I used Berger 168 to make 1000 in a 22 inch barrel. Brass does take a beating. I now use lapua 175 in the same rifle to make 1000. I find it's not the best. I am currently using. Berger 215 with a 29 inch barrel as an ftr rifle it does really well I don't need to load them hot to make it. Rifle tork can be a problem off some bipodes

thumb rule, heavier, higher BC bullets will be better for LR.....

IF:

You can handle the recoil and drive them accurately.
Willing to load tune and set them up as needed.

For 800 to 1000yds, the 178gr Amax is very good and makes a great entry point. The Hrn 168gr BTHP is another gem.

Berger 185gr to 200gr is the most popular weights in LR FTR which is pretty much what you are doing but with heavier and longer rifles.

There is no problem with the 168gr Amax making it to 1k.. I have shot them alot further. BUT they will drift more. However, if you have a load and can get out to shoot it, why not?

The key to any of these shooting sports is range and trigger time. Shoot what you have and then change as experience and desire dictate.

Where on earth are you finding it readily available anywhere? I am running dangerously low.
