I have a heavy 20" barrel AR15. I used to use a 223 Target Rifle, so I have an idea of what a good load looks like in that rifle.

What is good in a heavy barrel (Rock River) AR?

It has a match trigger and good scope, so that part is taken care of.

My grandson want to shoot a target rifle match with it. The collapsible stock makes it easy to shorten it for him. But I am not impressed with my loading results to date with it.

I have Sierra 77s and Nosler 77s. The Sierra group about an inch and the Nosler double that. Best powder tried was RL15.

I am going to try some N140.

What should I reasonably expect? Any sure fire pet loads?

Colt Delta heavy barrel. Lots of them around. Back when we could shoot them in the bush, they can and will perform better
than I can shoot. They were my favorite rifles, still have them.

Why is this in the SR forum?

I've had good luck with AR Comp and Berger 70 VLDs in several ARs (18-24"). Have always just loaded them to mag length and shot them.

The only thing about AR Comp is that it is VERY dirty. I have no idea why this powder is designated for ARs, I had to replace gas tubes at a pretty high rate due to them clogging with soot. And, I've often been above what Alliant lists as the max load... it gets even dirtier at lower pressure.

Chamber is a Wylde.

I have a lot of data from the bolt guns, but I assume pressure is too high for an AR.

Yes, and no... you can game the AR with an adjustable gas block and 1 step "faster" powder.

I have had very good luck with the Hrn 75gr BTHP and IMR8208.

Problem with the Wylde and NATO chamber is the longish throat. Some can be quite long and then accuracy becomes irratic.. at least by target rifle standards. I would say MOA'ish as pretty typical. I did get some groups around 5/8" but not consistent enough to call an average.

I have a custom McGowen being made up with a 223 Rem chamber. That will require a bit of throttling back but accuracy should be far more consistent.

I will be single loading it, so bullet can be loaded out.

I will make some test loads and shoot them on the weekend. I will compare RL15 to N140.
