Always hunted big game with premium ammo mainly for penetration and meat salvage. Now I have a 458 Lott that I want to bring on my next hunt and I know the power is there but what about penetration and meat damage while using a plain 500 gr SP bullet? Is it worth it to re-load some premiums? I'll be running some test weather permitting but would like to find out from some previous experiences.
Thanks

The kind of bullets used is important here. A heavy jacket and hard lead core would not open on impact on light games, often even if they hit bones. It will punch a hole, though.
If you want it to open, you will have to use either light jacket with a tip or hollow pointed or soft lead bullets.

I agree, we need to know what the intended animal is. For anything in this country, a 500 grain soft point will more than do the trick. Dark Continent, better choices out there.

Intended use is for moose and bears. I had previous experiences with the 338 win mag using interlock SP on game with massive wound canal and meat damage until I switched to Barnes X bullets. Reason why i'm curious about the 500 gr interlock SP's performance.
