Still make some of the best ones to this day
 
This 5.5 lb. carbine (from my "safe or two full of guns"), a Mannlicher-Schoenauer in 6.5x54, was designed in Austria in 1903 for obese hunters.

Nice rifle! Yes, they did build some lightweights for mountain hunting, also single shots were and are very popular, Blaser K95,etc.
But you'll see very few if any with carbon fibre barrels,Ti and composite stocks. Even stainless steel is an oddity for the most part.
