Heavy Geese

Better than stuffers -- more realistic and durable. Way overkill for up here though. We still kill limits with culvert pipe and plywood heads. Mostly used in high pressure spots in the US. There are about 20 threads going on that site about the contest. It just has to be pieced together now. The guy offering the decoys is legit and a sponsor and frequent contributor.

Ya, checked his site out, they are cool looking. Still think the biggest downfall in any set though is that they are too static. No matter how realistic, if they aren't moving it's tough to fool wary geese.
 
I own 4 dozen Dave Smiths, I can assure you, you wont find anyother more wary goose then real west coast cacklers, barely bigger then a drake mallard and they will circle spreads for what seems like days before going down. If the blinds arent prefect is everything isnt right they dont decoy well. And thats where dsds, and other decoys work, or dsds work more then other, they look like a goose, they dont look like a decoy, they're carved right, well I have to say i've drank too much dsd kool-aid now :D

There is actaully about 400-500 of them right now in our corn fields. They come off the roost at about 200 yards and then once they are over the field they start they decent circling about 4-5 times. All those eyes watching making sure nothing wrong or else.

Cant wait for saturday, try for my limit in just cackling geese, leave the big honkers and lessers alone.

My bud, Danny Clark on PEI is a taxidermist with decades of experience. He hunts geese exclusively with stuffers. In an area where goose fields are bought for $2000 a season, he consistently limits out with a dozen or so static stuffers as opposed to the other guys' 100 bird spreads. He doesn't even bother calling for the most part.

Realism makes a difference. In Alberta it is only how FAST you get your limit as opposed to whether you will or not. Geese really are quite stupid here in comparison to the Maritimes.

No doubt they are less wary where pressure is less but I don't think your description really does them justice.

15 pounds is a big bird but I wouldn't say unheard of. We killed a 13.5 pound bird on Sunday (on a proper scale) and it was freaking huge but no doubt there are bigger. If you get a really big bird, take it to the post office or a grocery store and weigh it on a government inspected scale. Get the person that weighed it to put their name and number on the scale receipt and then sign it.

I've never shot or claimed to have shot a 20 pound bird....old DUK's imagination is getting the best of him. I was fortunate enough to shoot a very big bird last year that was pretty much equivilant to someone shooting a B&C deer but it was no where near 20 pounds! It would have, however, netted me a dozen of those cool decoys if sjemac's info is correct! The bird has as you say.....long since passed! :D Poor DUK is just a bit sore because mine is bigger than his.....:D

Saturday morning I'm heading out, but am having a n issue I have not come accross before. My spot is all snowgeese now, perhaps a few hundred Canada's but at least 3,000 or so snows.

Don't get me wrong, It'll mean more shooting, but I like the big Canada's!!!

I'm really hoping to get a white fronter too, I have not taken one yet this year or even seen one this year. No Ross either.

I'd rather shoot a snipe than a Canada goose. I guess familiarity has bred some contempt and I like the variety I get with hunting ducks. I usually only shoot geese now because the guys I go hunting with are "goose heads".

White-fronts are great eating though. They call them "6 pound teal" in Louisiana.

I like the snow geese and white fronts far better than the Canada's on the table. I like the Big canada's flying in though, it still gives me such a rush. Again, I was raised hunting, where there were no geese to speak of.

Hopefully a few pics will get up this weekend.

I'm using the down this year for a small blanket for my little one.
A mini Duvet if you will :D
 
I have heard of 15 lb Canada's before. About 30 years ago I knew a fellow in Manitoba that hunted lots and owned a grocery store so had acurate weights. He said to get the real big geese he had to hunt a small flock of 25 or less birds and ideally of 10 or less. These were likely family groups, the big ones would be the adults. He said the biggest subspecies of Canada's would not hang around with the smaller subspecies. I'm telling it like I heard it!

Never met a bird I didn't like to hunt.......throw me in a blind with a box of shells and bring on the ducks, geese or what have you. Hope I never get to the point where certain aspects of hunting bore me! Still like a kid everytime I head into the field.:D:dancingbanana::runaway:

I made a pillow out of the soft down of the geese I shot.
Collected it for some time.
Two seasons I think.

The best sleep, and sweetest dreams, of hunting I've ever had on that pillow.:)

I think you're boy will sleep well in that duvet...:)

Maybe next year you should try to bag a Pope & Young goose with your BOW eh !?!

Seriously, it's fun, you could do a neat essay on it.
