I've narrowed my options to 2 scopes.

I has normal size crosshairs & the other has the heavy plex crosshairs (REALLY HEAVY).

both have the illuminated red dot.

My question to you is, has anyone hunted w/ a heavy plex & do they (being fatter) take up too much area of the scope that it hinders viewing ?
do they block too much of the animal (moose in this case) when trying to view it & clarify it's position behind brush , etc..

or do they help you line up faster ?

Leupold heavy duplex is nice, and crisp , got it on a 6 x 42 mounted on a 375 h&h . I like it. :)

You do not find the thickness to take up to much viewing area or obstruct in any way ?

No, not at all, I had that scope on a 30-06 ruger #1 B, and shot deer @ 200-300 meters without a problem, and the shots were dead on where I was aiming. Some of the best shots on game I ever made. And the reticle is easy to get onto , and where it needs to be. Thats why it went on the 375 , great scope. :)

I've got a Leupold VariX III 1.5-5x with the heavy duplex on my 416 Rigby. I quite like it. I don't find it covers too much up, and it's still plenty fine enough for shooting at 100 yards on a target with a 2" bull and heavy black rings. You can just see a touch of white in the corners of the crosshair when you have it perfectly on target. No trick to bench work...except the recoil.

i have the leup 6x42 with heavy retical. if i'm careful i can shoot sub inch groups with it at 100 yrds. it does cover a little more of the target than the standard but its better than you think and in low light its easy to see.

Ive looked thru both a 3200 3-9x40 and a 4200 2.5-10x40 with the heavy duplex firefly reticle scopes. they make me want to puke. probably ok for hunting inside 250 yards, but try shooting at paper at 300 yards with one...---> :runaway:

I prefer the standard duplex, personally. Had a 6x42 Leupold with the heavy duplex, didn't take long for me to decide to change it to the medium duplex. Regards, Eagleye

If I'm not mistaken (as not viewed on same day) I've looked thru the heavy plex firefly & this one I'm talking about is on Bushnells brand new 4200, 2.5 - 10x - 50mm w. Ill. red dot, & i think the crosshairs are even thicker on this scope. I may just spend the extra $200 for the Burris w/ the thinner crosshairs

I had a VariX III 1.5-5 on my BLR and it was the cats ass for running deer.Quick pick up and better in low light than standard plex.I just bought a Burris LRS safari with the quick plex to go on my 7600 in 280.Cant wait to try it out.

The Leupold heavy duplex is perfect, the other brands I can't say. It's hard to compare since some reticles are not advertised as heavy but in fact are very heavy compared to the Leupold. Like the Bush. Firefly, it's way out of line, it blocks too much of the view.

I really would like to only spend the $600 for the bushnell, but the crosshairs are REALLY FREAK'N thick, possibly even a bit more than the firefly. I will drop in again to compare to the firefly & than again to the Burris. Leupold is not an option, only due to that they only offer the red dot in a 20mm scope, nothing bigger leik 3 x 9 etc...
That's too bad, cause it is really bright & was pretty clear image.

I'll go for the Burris Signature or Euro diamond w/ either the red dot or the ballistic plex (illuminated) it's going ot be $200 more

so do you find the ballistic plex to really work well when needing a 300 or 400 yard shot (if ever required) ?
or just the red dot should be fine ?

I found the heavy duplex ( especially with a 50mm objective) really extends your hunting day especially when its cloudy. It's not a long range target reticle but on a hunting rifle there's none better. When i started out moose hunting I had quite a few days when it was legal shooting time and couldn't see the reticle especially looking upsun.

If you really trust your red dot (and keep fresh batteries on hand!) then it will serve as well on cloudy days then you can use the fine reticle. not sure if the red dot will help when looking upsun though...

I didn't pay that much for my 1.5-5x Leupold new. Shop around and you should be able to get one for comparable money. Or PM me and I'll put you in touch with my dealer:D

thing crosshairs suck for low light shots though, especially on moose or bear

I like the Zeiss Plex for size but My all time favorite is a No4 reticle in the first focal plane.
