Heckler & Koch SL8-4 20" Heavy Match Barrel, .223Rem

I didn't know that. I assume the RCMP used the age old "easily converted to full auto" excuse? I thought the HKSL8 and the HK243 are the same rifle internally?

Irony is the 243 has internal changes to make it more difficult to convert to full auto than the older G36 or SL8. Mounties know better than those amateur HK firearm engineers I guess.

Interesting. The spuhr magwell works wonderfully or I should say worked wonderfully. I sold the gun. What do you mean hk416 magwell?
HK makes a 416 magwell so the G36 can use 416 mags. You do have to notch it to fit in an SL-8, but mine has worked flawlessly. It's been on the gun for a couple years now. The NEA is junk. Sitting in a box in the basement right now...

Are they all really that bad? Not reliable? Or just fit and finish?

I had the SPUHR magwell adapter for mine, I thought it was junk. Ergonomics are terrible, you can't reach the mag release, mags need to be wrestled back out, etc...the factory setup is way better, the only thing the conversion had going for it was the bolt hold in the trigger guard.

Just as an FYI for those looking for other accessories, I have a HERA arms Hera Arms BCK Gen 2 ACR stock adapter on order with wolverine supplies for $389 since it is coming from Europe not the US. The ones on EE are just a little too rich for me. Wolverines next HERA shipment is just awaiting German export approval. So hopefully soon.

That is excellent new that Wolverine will be dealing Hera again. I had the BCK Gen 2 and ACR on mine. Very nice ergonomics yet I wouldn't do it again if I got another SL8. Between the thick walled alloy of the BCK and the ACR stock the penalty was 2 Lbs.

Any SL8 owners ever consider threading their barrels for a brake, fh or comp?

My lightly used Sl8-4 "G36 stock block" conversion came with the barrel chopped to 18.6", re-crowned, and threaded 1-28 for standard 5.56mm muzzle devices. It is fitted with a 4-prong flash hider, but I have an HK clone FH threaded 1-28 enroute from hkparts.net through a 3rd party importer for the authentic G36E look. I considered having the exposed front end of the match barrel turned down to G36E spec and fitted with a bayonet lug, but have since decided against that particular modification. There are far too many stories about ruined barrels to take the risk of degraded accuracy. Besides which, I quite like the heavy profile as standard and do not find the firearm to be poorly balanced as a result. Acccuracy as such, remains excellent.

With classification of the HK243 as prohib, the SL8 conversions will remain the only civilian route to "G36" ownership aside from the handful of obscenely-priced originals floating around Canada. As such, the market should continue to be healthy for the conversion kits and parts which are seemingly always in short supply. I will have a basic "Top Notch" brand buttstock and pistol grip/trigger housing for sale when my stock block conversion parts arrive next month. It will be interesting to see what a TopNotch kit is worth given that they are no longer in production but remain popular as the simplest of conversion method to ditch the fugly thumbhole stock.
