Hey CGN,

Would just like to gauge interest of getting some of these cool derringer style pistol brought into Canada.

ht tp://www.doubletapdefense.com/ (remove the space in http!!!)

Anyways these seem very cool, much better looking IMO then a Bond Arms...not to mention wayyy lighter, "smaller", has a much better trigger and doesn't need to be cocked after each shot. These comes in more poplar (cheaper in the case of 9mm) rounds, 9mm and .45Auto.

It comes "stock" with a 3" barrel...min. barrel length for us non 12.x holders in Canada is 4.2". BUT as you can see from the picture below...there is a gap at the real of the barrels (to show you if your loaded or not quickly). Now in Canada a barrel is legally measured in all NON REVOLVER types by putting a rod down the barrel until it touches the breach face and then measuring it. SO that means we have a little extra measuring space on this pistol so we'd hopefully only need 1" (or a TAD more) or less added onto it to make it legal. :)

Now...if this is not officially out til the fall in the USA and I am sure it will sell like hot cakes for the first little while so I don't expect them to be willing to make any "Canadian" models until 2014 or later. So we have time to gauge interest and see if we can get a dealer behind this and people can save their pennies if interested in the meantime.

There are many different models...such as aluminum or titanium ones along with the option of ported or not ported barrels with different pricing accordingly. The frame is the same size for both 9mm and .45Auto so you could also get a second barrel easily for it as well. Price IMO even with the extra fee for a slightly longer barrel, import/export fees and of course dealer profit should still keep these under $1,000. Not "cheap" but for well made, unique handgun I do not think its bad...especially compared to the already high price tag of a Bond Arms that lacks many of the features of the Double Tap.

***Bonus points for then being the smallest non 12.x legal pistol in Canada?***

Let me know what you all think!!!

Thanks,

- J

So if you think it's going to be a light day, pop on the 9mm barrel. Threat level orange, brood while you bolt on the .45 ACP?

I can tell you that the 9mm out of an S&W 940, which also absorbs 0 recoil, discourages you from shooting more than 15 or 20 rounds in a range session. The 940 has at least 60% more mass than this pistol. The porting may make it more viable to fire a followup shot with your numb and stinging hand, but you won't be practicing a lot with this little guy. If the 940 is unpleasant, 60% less mass means at least half as much again unpleasantness when you pull the Doubletap's trigger. That's in 9mm.

In .45 ACP, you would need to be a serious masochist to pull the trigger. After the first pull, I would predict a major flinch for the second.

In a word: Ouch!

Worse news: Doubletap and Heizer have parted company, apparently Heizer can't build these either properly or in sufficient quantity to meet their contract. Litigation under way. That doesn't sound like a rush to market either.

Take out the space and read the sad story:

Now it looks like a squabble over who owns what, each of these companies trying to make their own version while suing the other. I predict an untimely end for this little pocket pain.

I'd predict that the recoil of this would be along the same lines as the recoil from a J frame lightweight 357 - which is the most violent gun I've had the displeasure of shooting, that gun left my hand bruised. While it probably wouldn't matter in a life or death situation, recoil like that makes shooting a grim task.

Unfortunately, a lot of my interest will be "financially-based". I love cool and unusual guns; but cool and inexpensive guns are going to be all that I can afford.

The date on that story is 10 months old...its been resolved and they are coming in the fall, orders are being taken.

As for the recoil issue...man up? haha :p

I know some people are recoil sensitive, some VERY (the people who had to recoil pad everything and gawk at someone shooting more then 3 slugs without crying!!!). I doubt with would hurt much, especially with 9mm. and these are not the type of guns you go out and shoot 4 boxes through in one go anyways. Same kinda thing with Smith and Wesson 500s and .460Vs, .454s and so on.

.357Mag recoils much more then a 9mm and even .45Auto.

I'd be interested depending on the price and how the barrels are extended. I've shot a similarly sized gun, and found out to be fun as hell.

the problem with recoil and this is 2 fold, its quite stout especially in .45 which isnt a huge problem in itself, but the fact that all the force is transferred back into an area 0.6" wide means you shoot more than 20 or so in a row and your hand is pretty screwed the next day.

I still want one in 9mm but not at $500+ that it will cost

I as well think recoil would be a real issue. The bottom line is that the gun is made for carrying and as we can't carry guns in this country I cannot imagine why anyone would waste there money on them. They sure as heck are not going to be target guns that is for sure.

Recoil? Seriously folks? How can these be much worse than a Bond Arms firing a 45 Colt or 3" .410 shell? Sure, it's a handful, but I've fires boxes of 45 and .410 out of my Bond Arms at a time.

People are just wimps today, plan and simple :).

its a fun/cool gun...unique...how is another handgun CHOICE in this country bad? With all the big bored revolvers...those cannot be shot a lot at the range due to excessive recoil and both the gun and the ammo cost a lot more vs. this and those revolvers are MADE to hunt, which we cannot do yet you do not seem me mocking others who want them.

surface area, the bond arms has alot more area that it distributes the force over

No they did not. Probably a similar US to Canadian ratio as Bond Arms I would imagine. SImilar size production runs I would guess...compared to Ruger or Smith.

We'll see I suppose....but I'm in for one regardless. I love derringers.
