helical fluted barrel

As helical fluting has been around since well before E.R.Shaw started using it on rifle barrels (I recall seeing it on gun parts in the late 70s), I doubt they have a patent on it. Perhaps on a certain process for doing it. In any case, it is a machining process that takes a fair bit of time to set up and accomplish, although once set up in a CNC machine I would think it wouldn't be difficult to run off. FWIW - dan

Just a note, helical fluting is great for looks, but if you do it full length there is a good possibility of distorting the harmonics of the barrel when fired. This obviously does not contribute to accuracy. Helical fluting also has a greater potential of changing the point of aim as the barrel heats up.

This is more from a theoretical standpoint than actual test results. The PGW barrels are only partially fluted, ant at the thickest part of the barrels, limiting the harmonic effects.

Straight fluting does not generate the same "odd" barrel vibrations.

I've never seen a steyr with a helical fluted barrel. just a straight fluted. I could see how that could happen sandroad. but i am looking at building something similar to the PGW. I might just buy the PGW. seems like it might be alot more work and money and waiting then just buying the timberwolf

They're not set up for helical fluting yet. but they do standard fluting. Talked to Rod at corlanes and that is what he told me. this is who i was going to get to build the rifle for me..
