Hellllp!! Black soot on my pistol cartridges????

Yes, Titegroup or Bullseye should make your life much more pleasant.

Blue Dot's way too slow for .45 anyway. Keep it if you ever get a 10mm.

I like power pistol. Makes for some nice light shows with my 10mm, doesn't much in terms of crud.

I used to run WSF in my 10mm, now that's dirty stuff. I'm still trying to get the buildup out of the front sight dimple on my 1911.

I bought a pound of Universal for my .38, and mother of pearl.... lots of smoke. Soemone asked me if I was shooting BP at the range once.

I always found Bullseye and HP-38 were cleanest in .45 acp and 700X and 800 X were pretty good.. Blue dot works really well in high performance 9mm loads. W231 works well with target loads in 9mm and .38 spl but as you have found it is "dirty".

What bullet weights are you using? Your powder charges seem a little light, but it's hard to say without knowing the bullet weight.

looking at your reloading date, blue dot is way to slow for your 45. it is double what you are loading the 231 one at.

with the 231, i would try a bit more crimp or look at your overall length. even with cast bullets you should get at least 1000 rounds between cleaning. also check your velocities to see what you are getting. you are not giving enough information to make a good judgement as bullet weight and velocity are also critical. However i would say the problem is in the reloading not in the brass and in the case of the 231 not the powder.

Certainly works for 45, I haven't tried it on the higher pressure stuff. IMR/Hodgdon list various loads.

It does work very nicely for light rifle loads

One more thing: how could you possibly not be taper crimping. Surely you need to crimp to get rid of the case mouth flaring which is done prior to seating bullets.

Unless you are loading a very heavy 9mm bullet, your load looks light. I load 4 gr under a 135 gr lead bullet.

A hotter load with a crimp would burn a bit cleaner.

Blue Dot is just for hot, high pressure loads.

I'll beat the Vv N320 drum again. I started using this powder after hearing Bill Wilson recommend it for its cleanliness on a DVD that came with my pistol. I'm using 5.8 gr of it under a 185 gr JSWC and it is indeed clean !

My only other experience is with W 231 and HS-6,,nuff said. Once you get away from shooting filthy powders you'll never go back to em.

Did I mention I like Vv N320? Its super clean, meters beautifully, and makes a wonderful seasoning in soups and salads :D.

I use Titegroup, which maybe is not the cleanest powder, but is OK for accuracy and gun functions well. Internatl. Clays is a good powder but very finicky to load, but clean and cheap to buy.
And, I clean my gun when it gets dirty, my SV usually after 1000 rounds, Shadow same, Glock22 is still a virgin, only 500 rounds through it.
When you clean use a good quality lubricant like synthetic 2 cycle oil.
I went to Slide-Glide for about 2000 rounds and wasn't impressed. Gun get dirtier faster, still runs, but is a pain in the ars to clean all the gunk.

Good Luck

231 is a ball power. ball powders seem to be dirty, I notice, in rifles. Never ocurred to me the same would be true in pistols.

I have used Bofors rifle powders that are so clean that a once fired case is still shiny inside.

I use 231 and see clouds of something coming out the muzzle.

I have some cans of VV powders on the shelf i have never tried. Looks like 3N37 would be good for 9mm and 40 S&W.

It would be good for lighter bullets at higher velocity...but it can yield very unpredictable results for lower weight charges.

N320 would be a much better choice for a standard 9 or .40 load...

I use 3N37 for my Open gun (124 gr bullet at about 1375 fps)

Higginson sells Vit...last time I called he has 3n37 but no 320. Just send him an email and see if he has stock.

Cheers

Quigley. Thanks for that. I tend to shoot heavier bullets at medium velocity.

Will save the 3N27 for hot loads of light bullets and will look for n320. Who sells it?
