Hello,

Well I am new to the site and although I grew up on a farm I have no hunting or gun experiance. I am now 30 years old and have been thinking about getting into shooting and hunting but really had no idea where to start.

I live in cambridge ontario and have a have been thinking about getting my pal and hunting lisence but it is some what intimidating when i am pretty sure i couldnt get a bullet in a gun. I have shot a few times but not much and not in along time.

I guess I my end goal would be to join a gun club to so some plinking around and some small game hunting.

Any advise on how to best proceed or anything else would be appreciated.

thanks

Welcome abord, I just started the process this spring. I took all the necessary couses locally here in Waterloo, and joined a local indoor range. It takes a while to get rollin' but worth it in the end. This is a great place to start and learn.

See if a local shooting club has an open house or new recruits type of event. That can introduce you to many different types of guns and shooting sports.

Most gun shops or clubs will direct you to someone that instructs the safety and hunting courses. Some can squeeze them into a full weekend, others are over a few weeknights.

Once you get your (R)-PAL and hunting card you can then you can start pursuing the game you would like. Again, maybe someone local to you would be willing to mentor you a little bit to get you some knowledge and experience in the field?

Welcome :)

I took my pal with no gun experience (if you call air rifles experience then a bit i guess), the pal was very easy, the course was 8 hours if i rem and did 2 exams, one practical and one written, took about 30 min.

you get the card a 3-5 weeks later and then apply for pal, which took another 6 weeks, after that the spending starts

Enjoy :)

I had minimal "gun" experience out side of countless pellet guns. I had a copy of the pal books ahead of time to read over from friends who had perviously taken the courses. It's not necessary to get the books ahead of time though. The instructors will go over everything with you in the course. Then a written and practical test. If you want your restricted and hunting licence it's the same process, just a few more classes.

Hi & welcome, like the other posts mention, the PAL and Hunter Safety courses are very good. "Shooters Choice" is in Waterloo (probably other gun stores in your area but that's the only one I am familiar with), they can probably give you some direction as well.

Have fun.:)
