Hello from Ottawa.

Retired veteran, single dad to autistic mom traumatized kid. Had my license for years, but never had personal funds for anything - everything went to my son, his therapy and whatever made him happy. Finally got some VA support a decade later...looking into my old hobbies, and here I am.

Damn....gun ownership is in a state here, eh. I wonder how I can help...

I'll probably be sticking to 22LR for sheer economy concerns. I remember firing a lot of Aguila SSS 60 grain, but that was suppressed stuff in the forces, alongside some custom loaded long range stuff. I can't afford the glass I once used, and my old stuff is either in Petawawa or the War Museum from what I hear.

Regardless, hoping for some guidance, here, there or anywhere.

Welcome! Glad to hear VAC figured out how to help get you what the family needed. Family care is a real situation for so many people. The so-called normal people are just good at getting by.

If a veteran lives in Ontario and they've exhausted all the VAC and Legion programs, there's a very poorly advertised Ontario fund called the Soldier's Aid Commission. It is the remnants of a private bequeath specifically to help veterans. Make a good case and their mandate is to give away money!

You can private msg me about your branch of the service. I know a few things ....

As for shooting, you've got the right idea to get a .22. The Savage bolt actions are good. Ruger 10/22 can't be beat! And while they're available, I always recommend getting an SKS and a spam can of 7.62x39.

I shoot in Stitsville in the different 22 rimfire competitions. Ive done well later in my life and have a very high end collection of rimfire firearms. I would be more than happy to offer any of my comp guns as well as free ammo and the registration fee to a vet. Many forget but I DONT. This is not charity but a heartfelt thank you. I have all the high end gear and ammo as well as good dope for all my guns. I have a very accurate custom built semi with a Kahles 318i as well as a Vudoo 360 with a Kahles 328i and a highly modified Annie 64 MPR. I will meet you before a match so we can fit the gun and get you familiar with it. Welcome and THANKS

Greetings, newbie myself. Theres still a lot of stuff out there that won't break the bank if you ever decide to jump beyond .22lr... Maverick 88s are pretty good, get a field barrel model on sale or used and pair it up with some cheap challenger skeet loads and you'll be off to the races. Always browse your LGS and private sites for good deals!

Welcome home, there is cheap options when it comes to 22lr, norinco is a great example. 🫡
I'm fine with a host costing, but the ammunition is what gets me. Ten dollars a bullet was fine on the then Queen's dime (plus barrels!), but I'm happy just messing around now. Broken fingers, and a stroke later I will likely never shoot like I once did. That's fine, and I accept that.

Where does one find a reputable LGS? Call around...is there a list? I'm not generally a fan of what big box stuff is carrying. I don't hunt, just target, but not bench. I think they do competitions for that sort of thing I think, but I'm not familiar with the culture.

My psychology is bad for pursuit of perfection, so I avoid upgrade paths (10/22...) and just buy once, cry once. I was looking at a Volquartsen Take Down or some such in the future. But that's just a sense, I'll be saving for a year, waiting for the politics to sort itself out.

Thank you. I'm actually....finally somewhat stable. I got my first VAC funding after three years, but then lost my doctor, so I'm back in endless queue. Took thirteen years total... To be honest, if I wasn't in a coop on subsidy, I don't know how any of this would work. I certainly wouldn't have my son....

I'll save the funds for those who need it. I can slowly save, even if my position is less than ideal. For the first time in my life off base I can eat like I need (I think...) so I'll go with that.

Will shoot you a PM....when I figure out how

I was always a tiny guy, I always preferred bolt action to battle rifle. Punches through armour, ranges out further, and I'm not one for up close and person, unless its *real* personal, if you catch my drift. Recoil compensation takes the time it takes to rake a bolt so.... I'm not sure if that logic flies, but it did in my twenties. Something about the SKS, just...doesn't agree with me. I think I've had too many failures from Russian ammo found here and there. Probably a bad safety assumption I can and should get over these days.

Holy, this is more of an offer than I know what to say. I'll shot you a PM as well, when I figure it out. Let's grab a coffee or drink or whatever and go from there, if that's okay? I don't mess with anyone's stuff, and I definitely wouldn't be comfortable taking advantage, but I'm happy to listen to get the lay of the land around here.

In my twenties I'd be all up over this. But, I'm still taping my hands every day to get the fingers straight...I strongly suspect the tools supersede my capabilities. I'm also a decade out of practice.

I genuinely appreciate it. I'm not sure I have the words that suit my feelings, my apologies.

It’s all good. I you want to send someone a pm just click on their username. You’ll see a box (start conversation) just click on it and go from there.
