Hello all. Been in the army a billion years and have just been posted to Pet. Did a tour of Afghanistan in 2008-2009, but before I left went and got my restricted and non-restricted. Now that I'm settled in it's time to spend some money on guns.

And now the confession: I don't know a damn thing about civilian ownership. What I should buy. Where to buy. What clubs to join. Storage and transport laws I have an inkling. The Faqs here helped lots.

But some questions are in order.

Long guns-- what's good? I do have an interest in SKS, M1 Garand, and a good bolt action WW2 rifle(s). Are VZ-58's or M14's or old C1 FN's legal?

What's good for Pistols? Shotguns?

I can buy non-restricted from a gun shop and take it home the same day, right?

Please, gimme all the links you can throw at me. Somebody help the Newb.

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome. You'll find no end of information and opinion (lots of opinion) here. Some of it's pretty good. My opinion is that for questions of legality -- ownership, transport, etc., get used to asking Canada Firearms Centre (1-800-731-4000). Their clerks don't know a lot about guns, but they have access to information on their computers, and before you buy anything restricted, they (and usually the Chief Firearms Officer of your Province) need to say it's acceptable, and it needs to be registered with them.

I don't know much about long guns (I own only a Savage .22/20Ga over/under, a Win 97 US martial, a little Armalite .22 take-apart and when I lived in the US West, had a Chinese SKS for a coyote gun -- I liked that SKS quite a bit), but I have some experience with pistols (I collect odd ones) and revolvers. If you intend to have more than one handgun, I'd suggest looking up information on a good quality basic revolver like the S&W 6" bbl. .357s and .22s. There are certainly others. Pick whatever flavor you like, but it would be good to be able to handle them and make a decision after looking and handling. Pistols come in no end of flavors. My personal favorites are the HK P7 and the Inglis/Browning Hi-Power. Most folks favor Glocks and Sig/Sauers these days, but I'm old. If you turn out like most of the rest of us, you'll go through a bunch -- buying and selling -- before you find the ones you like to shoot. Enjoy the process and good luck with it. There are plenty here who will be happy to give advice and help.

"...old C1 FN's legal?..." Hi. No C1's or C1A1's. Prohibited. Ditto for any other FAL type. No semi'd, real, M14's either, but you can have a Springfield Armoury M1A(expensive) or Norinco M305(not expensive). 5 round mags only.
The Garand is ok with 8 though. The M1 and the Lee-Enfield are exempt, by name, from the silly mag capacity law.
"...What clubs to join..." There a Rod and Gun Club on base?

Thanks for the responses so far.

Yeah, I reckoned that an M14 is non-restricted so the similar FN C1 should as least be restricted. But I'm an infantryman, the internal workings of both firearms and the nonsense laws of our Lords and Masters are a little beyond me.
Shame really. I would love to shoot an FN. Because I haven't had the chance to do it in my army career so far. And not likely to get the chance seeing as the only time I've seen C1's in a weapon's vault is my old reservist unit.

But as to gun shops and clubs...anybody know of decent ones in the Ottawa Valley/Ottawa city or even just across the border in Quebec/Gatineau?

But yep, out to dig in the various sub-forums for info. Thanks again everyone

Eganville is about the best club near Petawawa.
For local purchases, go see Jeff at Valley Guns.
x2 ,
There are many of us who went from the Pembroke outdoor club to the Eganville club( you dont need to be babysat in eganville, you can go shoot any time)
Jeff at valleyguns is ex-military, and can order in pretty much anything.
If you need any info regarding the club or anything, send me a PM.

welcome aboard....used to live in the PMQ's then on Fred St. for a while....

Lots of forums here to answer your questions already, but here is a start.
What to buy?...go to your local club and try a few out, first....I am certain that they would not mind helping you decide, or letting you put a few rounds down range .
Yes, you can buy non-restricted from a gun shop and take it home the same day
As for long guns, the same suggestion of going to a local club and trying a few out.

Travelling anywhere on holidays or visiting for a few days?....check in CGN, let someone know and see if you can find a local club, and stop in as a guest. (here in SW ONT, there is a few clubs).
welcome aboard!
