Hello! I've been lurking for awhile now and thought it was time I introduce myself. I'm 27, had about a dozen pellet guns growing up, and used to compete in cadets as a kid. For the last 15 years or so I hadn't touched a gun until this summer when I took a motorcycle trip across the country and my brother in Calgary convinced me to go to TSE in Calgary.

Everyone there was very informative and friendly and I had a blast firing pistols all afternoon. I enjoyed it so much I stayed in Calgary for an extra week just to complete the R/PAL course they were offering.

Until about 2 months ago when I was at my mothers house helping her clean up all my dad's stuff (he died last year) we found his firearms buried in the back of the closet (properly locked). My brother and I divvied up the guns -of which there were 4, at which point I remembered that I had not ever mailed off my R/PAL paperwork.

A few weeks later I got all my paperwork in order and I took the opportunity to clean up the guns after reading a few gunsmithing books and watching youtube videos of proper disassembly and reassembly.

Of the four guns, I chose a 1975 Marlin Model 782 .22WMR, and a roughed up Model 84 Cooey in .410 that would have ben my grandfathers before my father inherited it. My brother chose a sportsterized Carl Gustav 6.5x55, and a Bolt action .410 Mossberg with variable choke (I forget the model).

Anyway, here's some pics for those who actually read my post. :)

I just wanted to say thanks to those who keep a site like this going, there's a great wealth of information!

All that's left is trying to decide where to put my next paycheque. Sig226(neat factor, but closest range looks like it's 1 1/2 hrs away) or a SKS which I could use on our large farm.

Also, since the cooey -as I understand it, has little monetary value, I thought of sanding down the stock and forestock and just give it a nice oil finish. Thoughts, comments?

Cheers!

little oil will look really nice make it look like nice old gun. i have a few of these...or you can do nice stain and varnish but more work and harder to do. Then again...its good practice on older cheaper gun. well its still worth at lease 100 to 150 at the most as a .410..I got one just like it. Cooeys are fun cheap guns that work awesome and nice to restore.
here is my 16 ga i stained and varnished.i used 200 paper to start then 400 then 800 in the end ...The barrel was in good cond...but you can sand the finish and redo it with birchwood casey cold blue and it will look nice just have to oul it few times .Receiver should be left alone as you cant reblue it cause metal content will look purple when you do it..I havent taken a photo of 12 ga that i oiled the stock on it..maybe later. As for SKS its a good bet cheap reliable and fun to shoot.. you should get at least one restricted to start with. maybe something cheaper like a ruger mkII. around $250 used. Sign up for equipment exchange and look around for a good deal..
welcome and have fun

While I'd like a restricted, are there any ranges nearby that would be feasible? I'm about 1/2 hr west of Montreal. So Ottawa is 1 1/2 hrs away... Also, I'd love if you could post a pic of your oiled cooey. I do have experience with woodworking, so seeing would definitely help me make my mind up. Also the blueing on the barrel is still very good as well as the receiver-no rust whatsoever, but the receiver has this.......'pearlng' going on.. it's blued in some spots, then gets purpleish in others.. normal I suppose?

Anyone feel like sponsoring me at a range today? I have my own wheels and a sks. Haven't been to any of the ranges in the Ottawa area yet. Got off work early because the rain flooded our office.
