Hi,

I'm 22 years old and kind of interested in learning to shoot. Since I don't know anyone who shoots and lives in Winnipeg, I was hoping there is someone here who would be willing to take me to a range a couple of times, so that I could get a beginners experience, which I'll post in the right forum right after this.

Anyways...me...im 22 years old, male, I go to the University of Manitoba (Architecture), and I'm always interested in learning new things.

Welcome to the Forum!

Your best bet would be "The Firing Line" just off Marion. Guests are allowed to shoot for a 10 Dollar Insurance Fee.

If you'd like, I can send the Canadian Firearms Safety Manuals to you. You'll need to read these before you handle any firearms.

I do not as of yet have any sort of certification or experience, so no RPAL. I'm really looking for the absolute beginners intro - just a bit of an intro and maybe being allowed to shoot a little.

I would certainly be interested in the Canadian Firearms Safety Manuals. You can certainly expect a private message.

Grouse Man
Selkirk is a bit of a drive, but I guess whether its worth it or not depends on how cheap is cheap?
I live pretty close to the Winnipeg Revolver and Pistol Association (I'm in Garden City), but I see on their website that they don't allow guests.

You should drop into the WRPA on Monday or Thursday evening and take a look around.
Welcome to the sight.

welcome aboard. I like you, am a young shooter myself. You should look into manitoba wildlife federation for the hunter safety course and go from their. Also ask some of these veterans on here some questions. There is unlimited knowledge from these guys so keep reading.

Hi there. Welcome aboard.

Y0u will find lots of answers to your questions here. However, I can start you off, I think.

What type of shooting are you interested in? This matters, because it will affect what type of courses you have to take.

For example:

Rifle and shotgun shooting only (target) - You will need to get a pal to borrow or buy any rifles or shotguns. To get the pal, you will need to take the canadian firearms course, pass, then apply for the PAL. Contact Dennis at Wholesale Sports, or Frank at SIR, both in Winnipeg if you want to take the course

Handguns and other restricted. You will need to take the restricted firearms course, in addition to the regular course. You will also have to be a member, in good standing, at a gun club where shooting of restricted firearms is allowed, such as firing line, WPRA, or Selkirk. This will allow you to get an ATT, or authorization to transport, so you can take your restricted gun to the range and back home.

Hunting - You will need to get a hunters safety course, to get a hunting license. The Maniotba hunters safety used to accepted as an equal to the general firearms course, I'm not sure if it still is. It was when I applied for my pal, 7 years ago. I'm sure someone on this board knows, that's the beauty of the site, if one guy doesn't know, somebody else usually does.

In short, shooting is a safe and fun sport, and there are many fun spin offs, such as hunting, competitions, etc. You can find websites for gun clubs in Manitoba, and send an e-mail. There are usually lots of guys willing to help guide a newbie along. Of course, I am assuming that your goal is to eventually be able to buy your own firearms. I may be wrong. If you just want to go along and try shooting once, you certainly don't need to go through all of the courses, you just need to find a shooter and tag along for the day.
