Hey everyone! New to shooting, and just acquired my PAL. I have always been interested in shooting long range, I don't know why but it just seems like a ton of fun to me. So I finally just decided to go and get it, and I did.

I haven't had a chance to purchase any firearms yet, and I have only fired a couple of rifles. My Uncle (the one guy I know who owns firearms, and also happens to live several provinces away) suggested going down to a range and talking to the people there, maybe offer them some cash to fire off some shots from their rifles to see what I like, basically telling me to try before I buy.

Only problem is since I'm the only one I know here in Vancouver who is into shooting, I do not have the slightest idea into what locations offer drop ins, allow "high powered centerfire rifles" and so on.

If anyone is familiar with the Lower Mainland and can offer me some advice as to where to start looking I would greatly appreciate it.

Welcome! Lots of us from the lower mainland. Decide what type of shooting you want to do before you narrow it down. Target - plinking, long range, handgun, etc. Hunting- deer, bear, chickens, what will you hunt? Budget- student or inheiritance? Makes a difference. Once you narrow it down, visit the appropriate forum to gain confusion, then handle a few in a shop.
If your serious about long range shooting, you'll need a wheelbarrow full of money and a 4x4, the longest distance in the area is missions 300m, and that ain't long range! ;)

Long range interests me, but I never had the illusion of picking up a rifle and shooting the wings of bugs 500m away. I was thinking baby steps, so I'd probably be happy with plinking for now. If I were going to be hunting it would be for deer. As for budget, I have steady income and low expenses so anything reasonable for the average working man.

I just joined PCDHFC, goggle it. Its about 30KM from me, I live near the PNE. Welcome to CGN it is for the most part friendly a few rough edges here and there but it is all good fun.:D

I have just the rifle/scope for you. I took it on a trade a few months ago, the guy I got it from said it was a tack driver at 250 yards. I've never fired it. Plus I live fairly close to you. PM me if you want to know more. Welcome to the site.

Poco is a good club... also there is an indoor range near poco, google 'vancouver gun range'

you can try all sorts of guns there... and then decide on what you want...

Welcome TNG! Your uncle is pointing you in the right direction. I can't speak for anybody else here but I don't and wouldn't have any issues with someone handling my firearms especially those new to the sport (provided there is respect shown). I'm sure there are alot of other enthusiasts on these boards who would be more than willing to share their interests. Poco, Ridgedale and Mission are all good choices. Langley is decent but they can't accomodate high-powers.

Welcome aboard, TNG.

Serious long range shooting requires serious big bucks for the rifle and serious investment in reloading equipment as well.

Lacking the finances to indulge in the latter, I just imagine I am shooting 300 meter targets but I do it with my .22LR rifles at 100 meters.

We do have a 200 meter range at PoCo and either shoot the steel gongs or paper at that range. I tried lobbing .22 slugs at the 200 meter target but my scope ran out of adjustment.

If I may suggest, start with an accurate .22LR bolt action rifle like CZ452 or Savage MKIIBV. Learn the intricacies of basic rifle shooting while researching what high power rifle you eventually want to buy.

If you want to visit the POCO range, PM me and we can set up a day and time so you can try my .22 rifles. BTW, we also shoot the 200 meter gongs with our SKS rifles/surplus ammo.
