Hey so new to the forum, not new to firearms, but im new to these m305/m14 things, When I bought it in Edmonton the guy was great and told me a few things, first off he told me to use grease instead of oil, is this true bad? Any tips for a new user? run surplus ammo? run .308?( I know they are similar but id like another persons take on it) any recommended upgrades and where can I get parts, are all US and norinco parts compatible etc. Also my front sight was beyond normal and F**** can I get a new front sight or should I file it down or something? Yes I sound like a noob, but remember that everyone is a noob at some point.

Good synthetic grease is what I use on most moving parts, even inside the trigger. What barrel length? Leave that front sight alone!! As far as height that is, 18.5" barrels need the extra height so you don't shoot waaay high. My suggestion is to read through the stickies up top. Lube it up without complete dissassembly, and go shoot it as is for now. Some stuff mentioned doesn't need to be done to some rifles. Mine needed everything, but that's mine.

168gr. Pills and under, I like 155s in mine.

There's plenty of knowledgeable guys in this forum, they'll be along shortly. And welcome to the club!!

Any Axel bearing grease will do.

There are fixes for the front sight, but get to know the platform first. Armtac in BC has most parts.

Most us parts are interchangeable.

ALWAYS feed from the magazine.

Besides this place and the stickies there is M14forum.com and if you go to M14.CA go to the bottom of the page and they will have an index of plenty of reading material.

This platform is really great, but you really need to research it a bit.

Have fun.

Welcome to the addiction, your going to love it or hate it :)

First step, read the stickies and take it apart, clean it and grease er up
Then do the tilt test and the hammer test ( really simple and essential for safety and peace of mind and very well explained in the stickies )

NEVER load single rounds into the chamber, there is a world of hurt waiting there. Load from the mag and let that bolt fly home, don't pussy it.
Any axle grease or cheap synthetic works, I like white lithium cos I can see the #### when Im putting it on. A nice curved syringe is your friend here.
Don't frig with the bolt unless you have to, just keep the firing pin and bolt face dry.
Keep the gas system dry as well, no grease and no oil.

Don't write a shopping list until you've shot the thing a while and tweaked it as per the stickies. Some of these Norcs are VERY capable.
Use the surplus for plinking, but for any degree of accuracy you are going to get interested in reloading unless your pockets are deep enough for Match ammo.
Keep the pills below 168 with the gas on, I have the gas off for anything over 168.
Get some good ammo and establish a baseline before ANY "upgrades".
Most upgrades are cosmetic or tactical and have no significant effect on the gun.
Doubt your own abilities as a shooter, don't always blame the gun. It takes a lot of range time to get used to this platform.
But when you do :))))
Leave the sight alone for now. Is it too tall or canted off to one side ?
If its canted off, see if it shoots straight. If it does then live with it or get a replacement Flash hider.

Keep asking questions someone on here will have the answers.
Don't be afraid to work on this gun yourself, you are VERY unlikely to damage it.
Its a military design and was built "soldier proof ".

Many people refer to it as a turd that needs polishing, but when you've finished polishing you do end up with a mighty fine turd in your hands, at considerably less cot than you might think.

Enjoy

Don't use the dishwasher.... (oh never mind).

Good tips above. Get it clean and properly lubed, and shoot it. Then add mods incrementally - and attend one of "Tactical Teacher's" (Hungry's) clinics if you can, or your #### will fall off!

Thanks for the help, but really I want to fix that front sight its bent way more than id like to have it and its giving me an OCD twitch, I have no desire to mount a scope, id like a nice set of reliable iron sights.

Can you tell us more about what is wrong with your front sight? Is it too tall/short, canted to one side, etc?

While you're looking around for sights, keep in mind that you can make use of M1 Garand AND M14/M1a/M305 rear sights. Only difference is that the M1 sights are marked in yards as opposed to meters.

Good advice. Listen to this member.

Please read the stickies - there is more information there than you can believe. As for the sight, it is likely that the barrel is over or under indexed. This isn't a huge problem and can be solved.

To belabour the point, set yourself down for an afternoon and read the stickies. You will learn so much and then if you still need help you will at least know what questions to ask.

Congratulations on the purchase !
