Hello thread. Looking for a club in the GTA

Just registered but I've spent the last few weeks reading up on the Firearms center's website so hopefully I can avoid asking too many stupid questions that are answered several times daily.

I currently don't have any licensing or even certification under my belt. I'm looking for a club in the Greater Toronto area which I can join and take my safety course & exam. I'm looking to acquire a PAL, restricted PAL and transportation permit within the next 12 months.

I have no interest in hunting (You couldn’t pay me to shoot at something breathing) but I am interested in taking the first steps towards recreational and competitive shooting. I'd like to put together a small collection of historically significant firearms (most are non-restricted long-arms) for my own shooting pleasure.

I've been putting off getting into this hobby/sport for a long time now mainly due to the expense, but at 27 I feel if I don't start the ball rolling on this now I may never.


I did read the thread listing gun clubs in Canada but recall reading about a few that I didn't see listed there. Are there any members here of clubs in the Mississauga/Brampton/Hamilton area? I'm willing to drive as far as Barrie to find a supportive environment where I would be welcomed despite my green status.

Just off the top of my head, if you are in the Missisauga/Brampton/Hamilton area, the first club I'd suggest looking at is Guelph.
 
Best club is in Burlington

The best multi-discipline shooting club is BRRC - Burlington Rifle & Revolver Club.

It is a 24hr/365d indoor 50yd range.

There are organized club events 6 nights/week from sport pistol to black powder, and IPSC/PPC to rifle competitions.

It's close to the GTA (much closer than Barrie or Guelph) and offers a lot - there's even a junior section to get the kids involved.

No criticism of the Grange, but why would you steer a guy who says he wants to shoot non-restricted long guns to an indoor 25 meter range?
 
More specifics would help. What interests you most? Some clubs are better for certain activities than others. Do you want a 300 yard rifle range? Clay target shooting? Indoor pistol? IPSC? IDPA?

Do you want to shoot on your own? Prefer to be part of a group? Not all clubs have the same rules. Research what's out there and find the place that suits what you want to do and in the way you want to do it.

It is done at my club www.eesa.ca

Personally from what you have described I would opt for Guelph personally as it give the best all around facilities in your area.

BRRC is a great club but it is limited by its indoor range only (albeit 50 yards)

The Grange is similarly limited by it also only being an indoor range and that only 25 yards.

I do not know enough about HAHA to comment so that might warrant some investigation.

Barrie offers about the same sort of facilities as Guelph but you cannot shoot alone which might play a factor.

Galt is also an option but they have "funny" rules about restricteds

The one downside to Guelph I must say is its somewhat limited hours of operation. However as long as that is a known entity you can work around it.

If I was 27 I'd move to the Land of the Free and the home of the Brave.
It's the best thing you could ever do for your kids!

Definitely move out of Toronto.
Maybe move out of Ontario. (USA ... Alberta)

But if you stay in Toronto, join the ORA.
Shoot long rifles with ORA, and handguns at Target Sports.

I belong to Galt, they have a 200 yard rifle range, 200 yard outdoor handgun and 24/7 365 indoor handgun range. I was looking at Guelph but because you can't shoot on Sundays that was a big turn off for me.
 
Barrie range

Barrie has shooters of pretty well all diciplines and the safty courses and PAL courses to boot. You could do your training here and i'm sure someone would welcome you up as a guest to look around and see what you like.

I used to drive up from the East end of Toronto and had no troubles with the trip but did eventually move up here to escape the shootings and the headlines of the Big city.

There is an indoor range 24/7 access a number of outdoor ranges for various purposes and a couple of shotgun fields as well as a 3D archery course.
We have around 500 very nice friendly members and 1 or 2 grumpy ones.:eek:
Come on out and see what we have to offer. Alot of the shooters at our clubs make the drive and a few shoot at more than one club.
If you contact me through the club site i'll arrange a tour and price list if i know your coming. Maybe we can even get you shooting.

The only "funny" rule about restricted is that they cannot be used on the 200 yard rifle range. Restricteds of all sorts can be used on the outdoor pistol range which is also 200 yards.
 
Yes I am almost 100% sure that has to do with getting the rifle range verified for restricted. The handgun range is inside the main complex behind a padlock gate, but the rifle range is 500 yards down the main road then behind a keyed gate. Probably alot more hassles for them to get the rifle range verified as restricted so they wanted to keep it easier for the hunters and old farts :D
