Hello all! After 27 years, I fired my first few handguns today at a range in Calgary while visiting my brother. I'd never fired a gun before even though my father had a few long guns during my youth.

Over all it was a pretty neat experience and I tried a H&K,S&W, Taurus,Baretta and my favorite by far was the Sig Sauer.(All 9mm.)

After all this I've decided to get my R/PAL, and give the sport a go. I think handguns were pretty neat for range use, but it seems like there's so much legislation restricting use and possession that I'm concerned that I'll spend 1k and end up having my pistol confiscated anyways...

Anyways this site looks like a really great resource and ill be stopping by often!

Cheers!

Welcome aboard! It's always good to hear about first time experiences. You'll find a great deal of satisfaction in shooting once all the legal BS is taken care of. And you don't need to spend 1k to get a good fun shooter to start out with!

Thanks for the greeting! I also liked a .22 mosquito with sight I saw at the range. It was much cheaper as well as ammo! But first things first, I need my CRFSC!

Also, I mostly look forward to the fall as I have property on the st. Lawrence and the geese there would be cool to eat!!

P.s. Are silencers legal in canada? The HK I used had a threaded barrel and the supervisor told me it was for a silencer when I asked.

First, Welcome to the challenging sport of handgunning.:welcome:
.22's are a nice inexpensive way to learn the principles of using a handgun well.
As for silencers, they are prohibited in Canada, but not in other places in the world, where they are recommended for sound suppression or sometimes mandatory.
Go figure.

I think it'd be awesome to own one! From what I've read however, it seems as though handguns are very inaccessible -ie. I could not use one for plinking (sp?) on my ~70 acre hobby farm and that you need all sorts of paperwork to transport one from your domicile to the range.

Maybe the best way to go about this is to get a membership with a local club when I return home and just rent for a while?!
