Bought a new Remington 770 in .270, came with scope. I realize its a cheap one. Its a Bushnell 3-9x40.
To properly fill up the sight, am having to be too close to it. Am taking the scope between the eyes on every shot. Would this change with a 4-12x40 scope? Am not experienced enough with scopes.

The scopes that come in package deals are rarely the best but you can try turning the ocular lens in or out to get the best focus and if your lucky enough eye relief. As for changing scopes the magnification of the scope does not by itself determine eye relief, in fact higher magnification tends to decrease it in many scopes. If your going to buy a new scope look at the specs and see what the eye relief is, like money more is better. :)

I tried adjusting it. Even had a guy out at the club trying to help me but couldn't find a good spot. So guess its a new scope unless the store will let me exchange it

The package scopes that come on the 770 rifles ,don't appear to be much better than the rifles. Besides, premounted scopes, are not mounted for you, so the eye relief is often not correct for you, using a proper shooting position. As far as getting hit between the eyes, I am wondering how you hold your rifle. Generally not enough eye relief results in getting a scope in the eyebrow.

I think you need to find a real life person somewhere in meatspace who knows how to mount and use a scope. Your inexperience means even the questions you are asking are vague, with way too many variables for people to recommend much.

Go to a gunsmith and have him mount and bore sight the scope.

I did have someone in real life "meatspace" help me. And I tried making all the adjustments I could. I know the premounted scopes are crap, and am thinking the one that I have has almost zero eye relief. I know how to hold a rifle, been shooting for around 15 years now. But holding it like I normally would, can't even get close to getting a full picture in the scope. My suspicion was a crappy scope, and wanted to get some feedback, before going back to the store, or spending the money on a new one.
Thanks to those who helped

Did a few this year, buy Rifleman rings and a Redfield Revolution in 3X9X40, this will cost you under 250.00 and after that you will enjoy your rifle, they got very good accuracy... Cheers. JP.
