WRT the joy of shooting, 9X @ 250 yds is on the ragged edge, not really suitable for fine work. I don't think it will do for 500. Our range is limited to <300 yards, and when I use a 6 - 24 X, I usually find that 18 > 19 is what I'm most comfortable with.
WRT budget, I have a Tasco Titan 3.5 > 10 x 50 on a 300 Win mag, and I like it out to 250. Buy something with at least a 50mm objective lens, and as much X as your budget can take.
Coincidentally a friend is buying a 6.5 Creedmoor to join his friends shooting long range, for fun not competition, and his choice of optics is a Bushnell XRS II Scope, 4.5-30x50mm. That is his choice, with budget as the first priority. He seems to have a slightly better budget to work with than I do, LOL.
Another friend put a 6 > 24 on his 6.5 Creedmoor, and he is shooting out to 1000. He shoots at around 20X, up to 24X to spot. He spent under 1000 on optics.
After 20X you will need to know how to read mirage and other long distance vodoo.
It is common for shooters to buy a bit more scope than they need for shooting, so they can crank them up for spotting.
Long range target shooting, is not for the faint of wallet.
Not knowing your approximate budget of what equipment you have, that's about all the advice I have.
Before buying look into or learn a bit about FFP vs SFP (First vs Second Focal Plane) and MRAD vs MOA (Milli RADians vs Minutes Of Angle).
