Hi all,

I have very limited budget and wonder if Vortex Diomondback 3*9 40 or Leupoid Vx-freedom 3*9 40 Tri MOA are adequate for shooting at 300 - 500 yards? "Adequate" means having a good chance to punch the paper after some practice.

Thank you all in advance!

If you were just tying to hit gongs at the ranges you indicated I would say sure,3-9x is fine
If you are going to try shooting groups on paper, or for score,I think you are going to need more magnification.
Your reticle is going to cover a fair amount of target at 9x at 500yds.
JMHO

Thanks a lot!
Will 4*12 make a big difference?

I'm not a competitive shooter so I may be out in left field here. This is what I have read in shooting magazines concerning shooting at longer ranges. If you can get something with a parallax adjustment that would help as well. Magnification increases may affect your POI at distance with regard to parallax. You need to familiarize yourself with understanding MOA. Learn to use your scope with regard to the load(s) you find work in your rifle.
This is a good video to watch if you have a bit of time:

Concerning understanding MOA another decent description/video: https://www.nssf.org/shooting/minute-angle-moa/
If you can manage it a good spotting scope is helpful also.

WRT the joy of shooting, 9X @ 250 yds is on the ragged edge, not really suitable for fine work. I don't think it will do for 500. Our range is limited to <300 yards, and when I use a 6 - 24 X, I usually find that 18 > 19 is what I'm most comfortable with.

WRT budget, I have a Tasco Titan 3.5 > 10 x 50 on a 300 Win mag, and I like it out to 250. Buy something with at least a 50mm objective lens, and as much X as your budget can take.

Coincidentally a friend is buying a 6.5 Creedmoor to join his friends shooting long range, for fun not competition, and his choice of optics is a Bushnell XRS II Scope, 4.5-30x50mm. That is his choice, with budget as the first priority. He seems to have a slightly better budget to work with than I do, LOL.

Another friend put a 6 > 24 on his 6.5 Creedmoor, and he is shooting out to 1000. He shoots at around 20X, up to 24X to spot. He spent under 1000 on optics.

After 20X you will need to know how to read mirage and other long distance vodoo.

It is common for shooters to buy a bit more scope than they need for shooting, so they can crank them up for spotting.

Long range target shooting, is not for the faint of wallet.

Not knowing your approximate budget of what equipment you have, that's about all the advice I have.

Before buying look into or learn a bit about FFP vs SFP (First vs Second Focal Plane) and MRAD vs MOA (Milli RADians vs Minutes Of Angle).

Special thanks for the video and advice of MOA knowledge. I play ARMA3 including long shooting challenges, adjust the scopes however never have used a real one.

I may raise the budget or look for a used scope.
