Looking to reload fgor my Win Stealth II. My old hogdon book lists a recipe for 165 gr bullets with IMR 4831 but nothing for 168 gr (which is more what I wanted). The new Hogdon website does not list ANY recipoes for .308 using 4831... why would that be? Any help / suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,

IMR 4831 is a pretty slow powder for the .308.

With that said if you do have data for using it with the a 165 grain bullet it would be safe to use with the 168 as long as you begin with starting loads and work up as usual.

I just checked 2 manuals and other than 1 load for a 180 gr bullet there aren't any other 308 loads for this powder. You may want to purchase another type of powder better suited to 308, like Varget. FS

4831 is much to slow. Varget, 4895, 4064, 4320, and RL-15 are all MUCH better choices. More traditional, too, so there's a lot more 'pet loads' out there to try

Buy some Varget. In civilian brass you can probably start with 44 grains. You will probably find you can work up to a bit over 46 grains with very good accuracy. I'm loading 46.3 grains in neck sized Norma brass with 168 gr SBT bullets with excellent results.

You would have to start with much smaller charges with mil-spec brass. Overall length also effects case capacity. Always err on the side of caution, start low and work up.

I doubt if it is possible to over load a .308 with 4831 (H or IMR) with a 168 gr bullet. Interestingly, the Nosler Manual shows a maximum load with a 180 gr bullet of 4350 and 4831 with 50 grs for both powders, and Load density of 108%. In my experience I have found that highly compressed loads are not the most accurate. Try 50 grs behind your 168. It won't be a maximum load, and you might have to reduce it to get the accuracy you want.

Just curious as to what you OAL is for that load and bullet?
