Hello Gnutz, looking for some opinions out there. I am looking for a new 308 starting platform to throw on an aics chassis, for my 20" tactical found a new home in a tac21:D I am throwing around the idea of these two rifles the 5r with the 24" barrel and 1-11.2 twist or a police with 26" barrel an 1-12 twist. My goal is to touch over a 1000 yards and be consistant at it. I would like to know what everyone's thoughts are before I make the purchase
Cheers
Patrick

From what I have seen the 5R seems to be a sub .5 MOA gun where the 700P is just a sub MOA gun that can achieve .5 MOA.

I did lots of reading and research when I was looking for my 308 aswell and it seems the 5R Milspec has a lot going for it. Both are very nice rifles but the 5R seems to be the big hype these days!

Milspec is also limited production rifle (not in Remington catalog), which means it may hold the value better.

Your thoughts on a 1000y rifle is going to make it to 1000 but you will not be a winner
in F class or be able to achive what a .308win can do.
Barrels on both guns are a little light and the barrels are to short, your speed will be to slow.
Get yourself a trued rem 700 action Denis, Mic Mc Fee and many others do fine jobs of truing Remingtons. get Kreiger,Mc Fee, Gailard, Smith, |True flite or any quality hand lapped barrel. at 30 or 32"
I have seen many fellows go your route and they just can,t run with the long barreled quality barrels, and end up going with Match grade barrels and good smiths to put them togeather.

If you plan on doing all that work, as mentioned above, to a stock action you're pissing up a rope and pissing away money. Better off going with an aftermarket action and spending the same money for a superior product.

Its been my good luck to own (and have owned) a few quality 308 bolt guns and one of the 'used to own' is a Remington 5R. The 5R is, make no mistake, a nice rifle but most are not in the sub .5 MOA rifle category. Mine was capable of that but was more of a solid .75 MOA.

If you want a factory .5 MOA or better rifle then, while you may be lucky with a Remington ( or for that matter a Savage ), you probably ought to consider Sako TRG, Accuracy International or (possibly) the Kimber Tactical/Advance Tactical ( mine, traded recently, wasn't quite a consistent .5 but was better than my R5 ). If you wanted to stay factory but a smaller, closer to home, operation then I have to also suggest the PGW Coyote. My TRG and Coyote are consistently better than .5 MOA - assuming correct ammunition and non-caffeinated driver.

To get .5 MOA or better there are alternatives and cheaper alternatives to boot than factory. Others with more experience that I can guide you on what to buy and whom to approach.

If you want to do well at 1000 yards you may wish to consider cartridges other than the .308 because, while that cartridge will get you there with the correct bullet choice and load, others will do so with better results. For many years the 300 Win Mag was thought of as the 1000 yard King and it certainly propels the 190g SMK all the way there in short order. If the 300 WM is not for you, there are cartridges in the 6-6.5 range that may well work - others with more experience can advise on these selections.

Tomochan, have you reload for 5R or it was factory ammo?

I have decided to go with 5R, reading other people opinions. I was tossing between Savage and Milspec and decided to go with 5R.
Time will only show if I was right or wrong.
Is 5R set for shorter ogive?
Have you customized yours to any extense?
Was a brand new rifle when you got it?

Thanks

Whats the difference in price???

If the 5r is $200 or more over the 700p I would get the 700p and get the metal refinished with guncoat personally. Unless you are a big fan of the stainless, then stick with the 5r.
Factory rifle is a factory rifle IMO.

Why wouldn't the SPSt shoot to 1000??? A 20" barrel will still launch a 308 to 1k. If you want more consistency buy the dirt cheapest Remmy you can find and send it to a smith to rebarrel it. Only a match barrel is going to give you the consistency you want, not a longer factory barrel or a nicer finished factory barrel.

Ok some good points out there, first of all I will not be competing in f class, probably just 3 gun, hunting, family, and work take up most of my time but I do spend alot of time at the range. A 1000 yards is just a goal and I want something different than the 20" tactical I've already got. I will more then likely use this rig for hunting as well when the conditions are right for it. The 300 win sounds pretty tempting, never had one so this is a possibilty. Also don't care for SS look I would have to guncoat it, I' going to talk to Rick at atrs and and Jerry at mystic, and any body else out there let me know, to see what I can get on my budget
Cheers

since a 5r is roughly 1200 lets start there and top out at 2000 I already have an AICS 2.0 chassis so just need action and barrel, oh yeah has to be rem short action, so is a 300 win mag is out of the question?

There is a 700P barrelled action in the EE right now aswell if thats all your looking for.

Pissed on a Rope ??

I guess i pissed up a ROPE  Mine has a Trued Action / McPhee barrel / Jewel trigger , Mcphee recol lug , NightForce Br scope , i out shot a lot of custom actions and barrels with it last match season ( my first season ) even got me a Third place in one match that had a lot of customs , the 5R is a great platform on wich to build a lond distance shooter

A good friend bought one of the 5r & I could not believe what he was doing with this gun that cost only 1200 or 1300 bucks , for the cost its a very good buy if you get serious he has an extra one still in the box. I think he has it listed here with rail for 1200.

Don't buy either. Buy an action and order a barrel. Then find a smith to put the pieces together. remington barrels are mass produced with little Quality Control and they are $hit. Talk to smiths who have repair experience with remington actions and barrels. I have even had a remington extractor fail on me. I will NEVER BUY ANOTHER REMINGTON. Sorry to get carried away I just can't believe people are still subjecting themselves to investing there hard earned money into false returns. Its like buying a vehicle, its a bad investment when it loses value, so make the best of a bad investment. Don't buy a Remington. Take your time save your money and build a rifle. Especially if you are going to put it into an aics stock. Plus check out the EE Precision rifles. Most of the rifles for sale are Remingtons, people buy them, then they dump them cause they are $hit.

His budget is $2000. Thats the all most the cost of an action its self.

I have gone threw a few .308's including savages.... witch I love.... But currently now own a 5R and its hands down the most accurate .308 ive own.

The Remington 700 5R is known as one of the most accurate out of the box factory rifles for a good reason.

There a very good buy and will have no problem taking you to 1000

open your eyes partner, the reason most of the rifles that are for sale are remingtons is because they literally dominate the accurate rifle scene. look at the aftermarket....which action type has the most build options/accessories for it??? what do most police forces use? what does the military use? what are almost every aftermarket action based on/ copied??

Yeah and so can a .223. There are alot of rifles that can take you out to 1000m. The question is has anyone held MOA with an out of the box Remington 5R in .308, this means rounds within a 10" (close to the size of a human head) circle at 1000m. And none of this yards crap either, 1000 METERS. If someone has, prove it and I will shut my hole. The reason the military (U.S. by the way) and police forces use the remington is because they are cheap!! Do you see any other military or police forces around the world using Remington? Just the U.S. Even the Canadian military does not use the Remington. Wake up.
