There was a dealer in the EE going $489 for a NIB 15-22, the cheapest SR-22 I've seen is $595.....
I wouldn't hesitate on buying the S&W just because it's plastic, their reputation is second to none.
I've had little (mostly little annoyances) problems with every single 10-22 I've ever owned not big problems mind you. Most problems I've had with rugers are fixed quite handily for very little $$$...... That is not the case with the S&Ws I've owned. Currently I have 4 different firearms from Smith is the stable and I find their products to be quite robust and hassle free.
