SO I have decided to get a non restricted black rifle....and would like some input from the people who have a passion for these kinds of rifles. So I am basically looking at either a keltec su16 with a pistol grip or a t97 in 223 and either the cz 858 or the type 81 in 7.62 x39. I am left handed and am mostly going to use this rfile for within 100 yard shooting and maybe some competition. Would love an option of an optic.

A T97 is no good for lefties. Well not unless you like eating brass. If you want a lefty bullpup you will have to pick up a Tavor with a left handed bolt.

The SU16 I would avoid like a bad case of herpes.

A CZ 858/VZ 58 are excellent choices for a black/red rifle. However mounting optics can be a little tricky. But it can be done.
 
Seriously, for your needs (NR, competition use and lefty compatible), I would say Tavor with the left hand set up, XCR-L or ACR. They all use STANAG mags and can fit LARs and Beu mags. Useful in competition.

The ergos on the T97 just suck and, like ebola said, you will eat hot brass.
The Keltec is ok for casual play but I won't trust it for competition.
The VZ and T81 are not lefty friendly and do not fare well in timed competition against AR type rifles due to reload times and mag capacity. I've seen enough VZ, SKS types used and their times are almost a minute behind the slowest ARs.

my csa vz58 has over 5000 rounds through it and no issues yet.

I love my VZ58, I also got a new CZ858 thats neat for my red collection!

I considered selling my VZ now that I got a CZ but just couldn't do it. Even with offers for 1100$ on the local buy and sell.....Maybe one day. Thats how much I love mine... If I did sell it, I think I would replace it with the .223 version to get a variety.

I have a VZ in x39 with the B&T magwell adapter and find it comparable to my AR's for time (unless I'm running my beo mags). I'm a righty so don't quote me, but I think there is a charging handle upgrade that puts it in the left for lefties. I love the platform but I can't compare it to my AR's in terms of ergonomics. There is one manufacturer that makes a true lefty dedicated AR but the name escapes me at the moment. Might be worth looking into!
