Hey guys,

I've just sold my SKS - I want to buy a first 'real' pistol. I've owned a couple .22s. (Smith and Wesson 422 auto, and a single action.22)

I have smaller hands, so most double stack pistols are out. (BHP being the exception). I've handled a few 1911s, and they fit my hand pretty damn good. I'm really leaning towards a Norinco 1911 in 9mm or .45. Also looking pretty seriously at the Arcus BHP clones at SIR. On the cheaper end of it, I've considered a new Chinese Tokarev, or a used Yugo one. Have also considered the Browning BDM (very thin). Thought about the Sig Norinco clone, but its probably too big for my wee girlish hands. Anyways - give a guy some ideas - also really debating caliber, everyone says how fun 45 is to shoot (I've only shot 9mm range rentals). I know I'm asking alot, but if those in the know don't mind answering the question, I'd really appreciate it.

My main concerns are accuracy - longevity - and overall best value. I'm probably limited to slim single stackers for the most part.

PS - No gun snobs please - I AM WELL AWARE that a $1000 pistol will be of better fit/finish/quality, etc. then a $200-400 pistol so save it.

IMHO...The Norinco NP-29 is very good value for the Money.
1911 platform comes with a good beavertail grip safety, with lots of aftermarket customizing options.
9mm for affordable shooting if you are not a handloader.

I own two NP-29s, they are both reliable and accurate.

Certainly as reliable and accurate as the three Colt made 1911s that I also own and shoot.

Cheers.

i shouldnt bash norinco on this forum some people cry and loose sleep when i do i am just expressing a opinion anyway as far as a cheep pistol their are many that have better percision and will maintain their acuracy long after a norinco is ready for the bann saw for example taurus makes good quality pistols and revolvers at a atractive price ruger makes the gp100 357 mag i paid 500 for a new one and that will digest even the heavyist 357 loads for many yaers to come if you shop aroud used you can find excelent deals my old man bought a smith and wesson 686 357 mag for 350 bucks in very good condition another pistol that comes to mind are the hungarian remakes of the browning hipower wonderful little guns for 399 any of those guns will out last the norincos norincos may shoot fine for a little while put they simply will not last for some aplications a norinco may surfice another reason not to buy norinco is we will be at war with the chinese some day and i perfer not to support a job theiving regime

Most 9mm are double stack...if you find the grip on a Taurs PT-92 too thick, then you're probably going to find most semi-auto 9mm too large. Best advice is to hold off buying for a month or two and do a little more saving. It'll open up more options to you. Do that, or buy a single stack 1911 Norinco clone.

Did you ever attend school, man? :p

Norinco 1911A-1 9mm

My vote for an econo 9mm would be for the Norinco NP-29 1911A-1 clone... just recently acquired this one used/excellent off the EE for $420 shipped with 3 magazines. Check out the 'extras' on this one [stainless mainspring housing, beavertail grip safety, ambi-safety, hammer, alumimum adjustable trigger, stainless hex grips screws, Hogue grip panels].... Nice trigger pull, too. Pretty good deal, eh?

chinese Tokarev copy

Lever Arms sells the chinese copy of the Tokarev for 199. You get a 9mm barrel along with the standard 7.62 X 25 and a spare mag. Buy two if you really want to spend 400.
