My Dad and I are signed up for our hunter education course and plan on hunting Grouse. My question to you seasoned hunters is what are all the essentials for hunting these birds?

Will we have to use steel shot on these birds?

Are these birds covered under a small game tag?

Thanks in advance..
Can't wait for the season to start.

yes you can use steel on them if you want tp pay the extra $$$ but lead shot is ok and yes the are under your small game lic just pick up your Ontario reg's it will tell you alot you need to know

Hello Dan,

My question to you seasoned hunters is what are all the essentials for hunting these birds?
Shotgun, gun walking boots, comfortable clothes and a good dog helps.

Will we have to use steel shot on these birds?
No and lead so much cheaper.
Are these birds covered under a small game tag?
Yes

Great thanks guys ..... Glad you can use leadshot because thats all my shotgun will shoot. I just recieved my minors licence too. My dad and I are looking forward to the season..

I use a .22lr I like it better then the shotgun.

but pretty much any shotgun will be fine. when I do use a shotgun I use .410 but thats just me.

grouse is lots of fun. very tasty to.:D

Try and find somebody in your area with a couple of pointers... and get them to give you some pointers.
If your gun will only shoot lead shot it is likely a full choke which is not optimum for grouse hunting... you might want to get something with an Improved cylinder choke.
Pattern your gun and learn the point of aim and where it hits when you shoulder it and point and shoot.
Finding Grouse and getting permission to hunt is a good start as well.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Hunting.

Best of luck to you and your Dad.

I am planning to use my .22's because I don't want to be picking pellets while I eat, but I will bring the shotty just in case. Thanks for all the tips and pointers I will be sure to post pictures of my first hunt!

Dan how old are you and your Dad if he is also just taking the hunters Ed?

Also will you guys be getting into big game next?

Ontario has a helluva deer herd that needs to be thinned out a bit... but not enough bears to sustain a spring hunt... ;)
