Help a newb with a 30-06

I have a Remington 760 30-06 pump action rifle.... got it from my buddy in January, regestered it, but have never shot it...

Went to the local gun store and it is run by older fellows who I am quite confident in their knowledge.. however, I still have to ask this question so that I know I am safe.

I went in and asked for a box of 30-06 and said I am sure it is springfield, because it says sprg on the barrel...

So what I got is a box of .308 ........... so looking around online and I see that 30-06 and 308 is the same bullet diamater...

My question is this... Is a 308 cartridge safe to use in a 30-06 and if so, what are the differences and any other tidbits of info you guys have in your collective knowlege.

Thanks for the help and I still trying to figure out how to use the search properly... I keep coming up with nothing found.... I am sure I am using it wrong
 
That's what I thought... I just wanted someone to confirm it before I had a gun blow up in my face

Thank you.... I'll probably just hang onto it anyway... A 308 is on my list of firearms to get...

The only thing I don't like about this particulate rifle, is that it's a pump action and not bolt action.... call me weird, but I think pump action belongs on my 12 gauge and not rifle. lol.. I know... just personal preference.....

Who knows, I may just like this little noise maker...

All of my regular use rifles are bolt action... it's my preference... but there is nothing wrong with that pump at all..... very nice guns....
 
Rem 760 is a really good rifle and well worthy of hunting with it. My Father had one and used it exclusively for many decades, it still works long after he has been gone. You need to shop for 30.06 cartridges.


Your confusion is with bullet diameter and cartridge size. Rifles can have the same bore diameter, but that does not equate to the same cartridge. When ever in doubt, use only the cartridge size engraved on your rifle barrel.


Popular cartridges such as 300 mag, .308, 30.06, 30-30, 7.62x39r, 7.62x54r, ect all are considered 30 cal class bullets, but none of them are the same, nor are the cartridges interchangeable.

I certaainly wouldn't call you weird.
A bolt action is the only type of action I want, with any centrefire rifle.
I also don't think it is a case of a 308 not having much advantage over a 30-06.
To most of us, it is the other way around. I consider a 30-06 to have a decided atvantage over a 308, through it's ability to be loaded heavier and a big advantage with bullets heavier than 180 grains.

Gotcha... I thought it was kinda fishy even tho data looks a little similar.

Well I am really limited here in Kamloops... For Ammo, I have my choices of 2 canadian tires (neither sell firearms), Walmart... so those 2 places only have wet behind the ear kids working in those departments...

Then I have the gun store and Wholesale Sports... I went to the gun store assuming they would be the most in the know in town as this place has been around for as long as I can rememeber, plus it is less than 10 mins from my place... Wholesale sports is about 20 mins from me... but so far, wholesale sports hasn't steered me wrong, even tho alot of you complain about them....

Couldn`t have said it better myself. I have shot quite a few pump rifles in 06 and other calibers sighting them in for friends and wouldn`t own one myself. Love my 870 20ga though.
 
You can read obviously. So why would you think 308 winchester would work in a rifle that has 30-06 springfield marked on it barrel? All the stores have the labels visible in their cases, look for one that has the same markings as what is on your rifle.
 
If you find the pump to be too weird for you pm me a price and some more info... it happens to be on my "to buy" list lol

My brothers and I used to do quite considerable bird hunting. I started with a single shot H&R, then used double barrels, both side by side and o/u, in 12 and 20, but I never used a pump.
My one brother always used a pump, a 37 Ithaca. One time we were on a river in a 32 foot river boat, one in each end of the boat, which was tied on the shore parallel to the river, waiting for geese to come flying down the river. One of us suggested changing guns, he took mine, I took his.
Shortly after a dozen geese came flying down, over the river. Each of us fired one shot. I asked my brother why he didn't fire the other barrel. He said he kept pulling the trigger, but it wouldn't fire! He knew full well it had two triggers, but in the thrill of honking geese, he forgot to change to the other trigger!
He said to me, who had his Ithaca pump, "why didn't you shoot more times?"
I told him I was trying to, but coudn't find the other trigger!

Sorry... Unfortunatly it's already spoken for... only real reason I went and got a box of ammo, is so I could shoot it at least once before I sold it to the guy.... I will get a chance to shoot it again, as I will be holding it for the summer.
