Hey Guys;

I'm thinking of joining the BP crew... I'd like a modern rifle, preferrably a break action, synthetic stock, nothing fancy, must be tough and reliable, take 209 primers, must be EASY to CLEAN...

Let me know what's out there and if you have linky, please pass it on to me.

im a newbie also..:D but i have picked up a traditions lightning
its a ss bolt action...have yet to try it out ..as i dont know crap of them..in fact im so green on them i ,m not sure of correct way to load them:( ..but im working on it;) cant wait to have my first full of the trigger
 
I shoot lots of Black powder but unfortunately I shoot old muzzle loaders and mostly flintlocks at that.. So unfortunately I can't offer you fellows any helpful advice.. I'm sure there's a few fellows here that will be able to answer your questions though!
 
choice of gun depends on if you want to be a purist ( go buy a modern gun percussion or flinter as designed pre 1898 , or be a modern in line type.
i reccomend the old originals since i feel /my opinion is the inlines go against the black powder traditions ...........there as acurate an a modern centre fire and velocity to match.
 
jay...i dont mean to post whore on your thead here..but i being a new muzzleloader owner.. i have a dumb question..how do these pyrodex pellets work?
 
I currently have a Rem 700 ML in 50 cal. It shoots as well as I want it to. If and when I buy a new one, I am leaning towards a TC Omega as far as inlines go. They are very easy to clean and not a lot of mess around the breech plug. The Rem 700 has got to be one of the dirtiest in regards to fouling of the bolt and scope. If shooting at the range for the day you had better cover the underside of your scope or it will get residue buildup that is very hard to remove. It also discolors the underside of the scope.

The pyrodex pellets are a solid form of the pyrodex powder,available in 30 & 50gr pellets.
The pyrodex pellets have a portion of black powder on the base or bottom for ease of ignition,they also have a hole thru the center for the in-line ignition to allow the flame from the 209 primer to enter,the pellets,although designed for inlines will also work in side-lock percussions as I have tried this.
Triple 7 pellets are the hottest thing going these days for in-line shooters/hunters literally.
You simply drop the require amount of pellets down your barrel(ensure the gun is not primed),in my case it would be 3 or 150grs.Place the sabot on/in muzzle,and continuing loading.You also have the option of using Triple 7 pellets(NEVER mix pyrodex pellets w/Triple 7 pellets) which are basically the same but do not contain sulphur and are a helluva lot easier to clean up after shoosting,simply use soap and water.

Sorry to stray off topic (slightly);

but what about the Savage 10MLII? I am thinking of getting a ML for deer hunting (moved to a ML hunting area).

From what I gather, its not a true BP, rather a modified bolt action to comform to ML hunting (which accepts smokeless powder).

Is it worth the extra cash? and I assume it runs along the same line as a Savage 200 for reliability.
 
For an entry level bp look at the Omega Z5, pursuit lt or pro, or NEF Huntsman. I just got into this with the same requirements in my list. I ended up with the Omega Z5 as I got a great deal from scott r here on this site. My next choice was the Pursuit pro for around 320.00, any of the above are great guns from what I read.
 
I was actually looking at buying the Omega Z5,what a helluva deal!!
For a T/C its moderately priced,but I liked the "Encore" more because the barrel versatility.The Omega Z5 with the thumbhole stock looks pretty sharp too.They have them priced at S.I.R. for $414.99,item# 433500,pg. 151.

What I found with the Encore is that the extra barrel's cost almost as much as a new gun, you would be better off spending another 100 bucks and get the receiver with your extra barrel.
 
Hmmmm,THE MODERN M/L,,,eh ?
Easy cleaning,?Try virtually NO CLEANING!(Like a High Power).
Comp/ S/S ?No problem,they got it.
There's only one,,,the Savage 10ML-II.(Smokeless Powder !!!)
Want to be handicaped?Load it with T777,Pyro or B/P.
Forget all the others.
Has it all.For a reasonable price too.

Just bought a CVA in-line Kodiak. It has a lever trigger guardwhich drops the back of the action down to reveal the primer. Purchased at Gander Mountain in the U.S. for $129.00 with a $20.00 sling thrown in! Similar, I believe to the T/C Omega.....maybe not as fancy. Reason....you can mount a scope.... my old eyes need some help. Takes up to 150 grains of Pyrodex. No trouble getting it back across the border once I figured out the system. Jay,You're right,a break or falling breach type action is (IMO) the way to go. A bolt action serves no purpose in a M/L.Added length,and usually a shorter barrel.
I have a T/C omega (falling or swinging breach)I think its great.My wife has one as well.
If you like the break action and can afford to spend a little extra cash I would suggest a T/C Encore.If money is a little tight ,there are a number of knock-offs out there that shoot just fine.CVA Optima pro is the knock-off to the T/C Encore and the ones I have seen seem to shoot just fine.CVA also make a knock-off to the T/C Omega called the Kodiak and I have seen at least 2 of these shoot reasonable groups at 100 aswell.
I would also suggest to you to NOT go super cheap and pick up something along the lines of the CVA "Wolf".I have seen one of these in action and was wasnt surprised by the performance of a <200cdn M/L .In almost all cases,....you get what you pay for.
Also if you plan on using a scope with your M/L get at least decent bases and rings and dont buy a $79.00 cdn walmart special as most people do.
These are just some suggestions.
 
i just bought the new 29" CVA optima pro with a fluted barrel.(becareful there is an optima with a shorter barrel hence the word PRO)

We put it up against a T/C encore and it actually out shot it!
I use 150gr pyrodex with Powerbelt bullets and it is sweet.

But i also think that BP has gotten a little much like centerfire already so i won't sell my cap lock just to feed my primitive self once in awhile.

Easy to clean very good gun.
