Hello Everyone, I'm new here.
A bit of background: I'm a Canadian city-boy. When I was younger I did a few seasons of hunting with my father, I still have my hunter number but my old FAC has long since expired. I've put a few thousand rounds down range with everything from a .22LR to a 30-06, but I've never fired a pistol. I stopped hunting when my father passed away and I haven't been to the range in 10 years.
Next weekend I go for my Restricted Possession and Acquisition license course. I'm doing the course because my boss is also taking the course and wanted a familiar face to do it with, and now I have a shooting partner. The more research I do the more excited I am to start shooting again.
Any "first time pistol shooter" advice, or "Canadian handgun owner" advice would be greatly appreciated. I already know about LTATT's and have read as much as I can about the rules and regulations for restricted firearms ownership as I can. I'm looking for "experienced wisdom" not "here are the rules".
Now for the inevitable, which gun should I buy and what caliber?
My first thought was "I'm getting a Glock. Action hero style." however after looking at several models online they don't really appeal to me visually. Nothing against them, they are just kind of "plain" looking. I do however like the technology used by the Glocks. After some basic online research I am leaning towards the Springfield XD Tactical 5" in Bi-tone finish (oooh shiny) but I can't decide/don't know enough to pick a caliber, I also haven't been able to find a dealer for this gun in Canada, can we even get these here?
I was thinking of going 9mm since it's cheaper to shoot, however the more I look into it the 10 round restriction makes me think I should be going with a larger round. The XD 9mm holds like 19 +1 rounds, the XD 45ACP holds 13+1. Knowing that I can only get a 10 round clip anyways, doesn't it make more sense to go with the .45? Exactly how much more expensive is it per shot to step up from 9mm to .45ACP? Also, is this a good first handgun?
Also important, buying a gun. Should I be looking at local gun stores or ordering online? I have a feeling that importing from the US is going to be cheaper, but a pain in the ass for paperwork. Anyone have experience with this?
Also, I live less than half a block from Wanstalls, so I will be visiting them in the near future.
I'm obviously going to try to rent/borrow a few different guns to try before I drop down cash on a weapon, but I would at least like to be headed in the right direction instead of wandering aimlessly down the path.
Thanks all!
