Are some people really that anal with their optics? Good lord, it's a hunting scope, just use some sort of soft cloth that doesn't resemble sandpaper. When the smudge is gone, stop wiping and only clean the scope when it's actually dirty. A fingerprint smudge won't make you lose 1 hour of daylight while hunting.

I was just razzing ya :D congrats on your first piece of glass, Zeiss is good stuff. Get yourself some butler creek black flip caps to protect those lenses :)
 
Isopropyl alcohol on a lens tissue or a cotton cue-tip (I'm a microscope company employee so used to lens coatings). The one thing you always have to be aware of is dont rub glass when it's dry (breathe on it first) and blow off any particulate matter such as sand which would scratch if rubbed onto the surface. I also highly doubt fingerprints will do any harm.

did you miss the bit about it being the LEICA FACTORY SERVICE DEPOT?
GERMAN/SWISS have a different LEVEL of service than the north american shop-

Funny how you claim to have worked there for 5 years and can't spell the name. It's LEICA.
Perhaps that's how it's done at the factory service depot. It's not necessary to do it on a hunting scope. That was my point, chill out.

Where do the Swiss come into play here, I wasn't aware they're known for optics. Perhaps you meant Austria(Swarovski, Kahles)? Close by, but different country. The Swiss do make nice watches though. Did you work for Rollix as well?

typo- i know darned well how to spell it- actually i worked for wild/lietz, which was bought out by sokkisha , then the whole works was bought out by leica- and the factory was in heerbrugg, which was in SWITZERLAND the last time i looked-
and it's astronomical and geophysical, and camera lenses the swiss are known for

It's spelled LEITZ. LEICA comes from the terms LEItz and CAmera. Perhaps if you had entered the correct spelling into Google and subsequently Wikipedia, you would've come to the conclusion that LEITZ had nothing to do with Adolph Lietz nor the Japanese Sokkisha.
So, who did you work for again?

No big whoop. Just use a camera lens cleaning kit if you want to keep it nice. A little dust doesn't hurt unless you grind it in to the coating in the field.

Use a lens pen as a convenient tool to get fog off, but avoid hard wiping until you can do a proper job.
 
Good god ,When you are out in the bush beating around ,trying not to become some critters dinner,its raining/snowing you are tripping over god knows what and when you do get a chance to look over your gear you find tree crap, mud and everything else is stuck to everything ,find a clean bit of clothing (sleeve,shirt tail) and remove the crud from the lens (carefully) a soggy bit of Kleenex or TP will do.It will survive (been there done that)
Now falling off a small cliff and landing on the scope (thats not good) and can void the warranty, may even scratch the lense.
Just teasing,these scopes are designed for rough use and will stand up to some crappy stuff,a clean cloth and alchohol based fluid (yes scotch or better yet Bourbon (small amount (dont waste it)) will clean off residue with no side effects.
