Help adjusting the SKS front sight

I bought a Norinco SKS from Lever Arms, and right from the start it was shooting way off, so I bought a Front sight adjustment tool for it, but I can't seem to adjust the windage. The tool works like so:

SKS_windage.jpg

I put it on the front sight and tried to turn the screw till I turned blue, it would not move a hair. finally I got worried I was doing something wrong and that I would damage the sight, so I gave up.

Does anyone know anything about this? Am I missing something, or do I just need to roll up my sleeves and twist harder?

It should turn no problem, mine wasn't tight at all (I tapped it with a wee ball peen hammer, using a 1/4-20 bolt as a punch, and it moved). Are you sure you're doin' it right? The adjustment screw should be perfectly aligned with the front sight windage dowel, and the hole on the other side should have clearance for the other side of the dowel. There are directions for this procedure on surplusrifle.com, which I'm assuming you've seen :D Soaking in penetrating lube wouldn't hurt, either. Just hose it on there and try again tomorrow. Let us know how it goes!

Pardon my ignorance, but WTF is kentucky windage, and why does it rock so much?

Hehehe! :D
In a nutshell...
If your gun shoots to the Left aim a little more to the Right etc etc. :D

If you have ever owned quirky guns or have ended up using them in very windy conditions you will have an idea. :D

Hey Azz!
Does the sight adjust in the other direction?

I'd talk to the folks that sold it to you...
I'd also be tempted to try a padded vice, a Brass punch, and a hammer.

I hope you can get things figured out OK.
Let us know how things go.

I had trouble shifting the front sight for windage on my SKS D, in the end I put it on my work bench and bashed the #### out of it using a bolt and a big hammer, it moved eventually

Hey Azz, where did you get the tool? Did you get the elevation one too? Can I rent or buy it from you?

This goes for anyone else in Greater Van.

I needed to set my SKS to 300m just to get on paper at 50.

First thing, buy some Kroil or another GOOD penetrating oil, NOT WD-40.
Second, unscrew the front sight post; before doing that note the height of it.
Once the front post is off, put a few drops of Kroil in its threaded hole and around the post mount and give a few taps with a brass punch and a hammer on each side of the horizontal rod. Give some soaking time and do it again. It will eventually loosen up.
Before remounting, try to get evry trace of corrosion out of it with a 0000 steelwool pad and oil. Oil the thing and reinsert. It should be a very tight fit but not seized.
PP.

Long nosed pliers work just fine. If you want a purpose made job get an old screwdriver and cut a slot in the shaft.

Azz and i6s1;

I second the Kroil for penetrating oil. However, before you risk damaging your SKS's try one of these.

I have several kicking around, and will sell one to each of you if you choose.

Besides adjusting the windage, they are also useful for adjusting the elevation of the front sight.

Cheers!

Moov-it works well as a penetrating oil too. Let it soak and warm it a bit if you can (2-300 degrees) the expansion will help break it free. Don't over do it, if the oil smokes your warmer than you need to be.

In commonwealth terms it is called "aiming off" If you hit to one side of the bull, aim off the centre. A time honoured system with the SMLE since later models didn't have a windage adjustment.;)

Also taught with the Long Lee, Martini-Henry, and the snider. Probably started with the rifled musket.
