Hey guys, figured I'd ask some of the grizzled hunting veteran's for some input on the likely age of the buck I shot this year. My guess is 5 1/2 years, but I'm not really sure.

More flossing, fluoride toothpaste and less junk food after supper.

More to the point, I might have a table in 'a safe place' that will help with your question.

Sometimes a picture of the actual deer can help along with the teeth, mature but no clue.

He wasn't all that big (~200lbs dressed and hung for 4 days), but he had a messed up leg (it was on a bit of an angle with a big lump at the knee) so I'm thinking that may have retarded his growth?

Before someone makes a joke that I shot the retarded cripple, he seemed to be moving around and fighting just fine.

Nice deer diemaco, the browning hat came through for you, did you get him with your bow or the 7mm-08?

You seem to be slowly cleaning up the mentally disadvantaged critters one at a time, first the goose now this.

Congrats on a great buck.

Lol, thanks. You forgot about the grouse I chased into my garage and then wacked in the head.

I got him with my 7mm-08. I haven't seen anything but does while I was out with bow.

I first heard him and a doe running through the frozen grass. He was grunting like crazy. I likely wouldn't have seen him if he wasn't making so much noise because the grass in the field is so tall. They took off when I raised my rifle for a shot. He came back after getting into a fight with a buck with a rack with really good tine length. The doe snuck by first about fifty yards to my right, then he came right towards me. Luckily I had my rifle ready the second time around and I let him have it at 60 yards. He was coming closer, but I didn't want to blow it a second time.

I know a person that shot a nice 4X4 whitetail that had a front leg missing from above the knee joint. It had bee shot off or possibly cut off when a fawn by haying operations.
Deer acted quite normal and was sen chasing a doe.

OK young man, pull up a bucket while I retamp my favourite pipe. Mind that old hound dog laying there by the fire. He won't bite - hard.

From the Youtube posting, I see you've got a mature jawbone with the 2 cusps on the 3rd tooth (ie 3 1/2yrs and up). I see wear on the enamal and exposed dentine. Hard to see the gumline, but what I see looks fairly high. So, depending on what the local feed was (soft grasses and grains or coarse cedar boughs and seed grains), I'd estimate your boy was 3 1/2 or 4 1/2 yrs old.

Now step back and close the door quietly. The hound dog gets upset if he's startled from a dead sleep.

The problem with the youtube video is it doesn't really tell you anything about the 3 1/2yo plus deer jawbones, just that it becomes more difficult to judge at that point. I was going by this guide when I came up with 5 1/2 http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_bk_w7000_0755.pdf

The 4th tooth is pretty dished out, and the teeth are worn down quite abit in height. He was most likely eating grasses and agricultural crops.
