I know this question has been brought up before.

I am the proud new owner of a Mark XIX in 44mag.
I purchased it from Ellwood Epps in Orillia. The person there (i wont mention names) recommended I only use Winchester Winclean stuff. That all other ammo is dirty and I will be spending too much time cleaning the gun. He even discouraged reloading.

Any thoughts on this.

I would like to buy some factory ammo and then start reloading my own. What do you guys use or recommend as far as factory and reloading.

I appreciate any feedback.

I use Wolf Bullets. Reloads. Very pleased with their product. Some gripe about it... I like it. Never a problem, never a misfire, not any 'dirtier' than any others I have used, INCLUDING the Winchester stuff.

Just bought 2,000 rounds of 38 special in HBWC for my S&W 52-2 and he made them up just the way I wanted them.... as spec'd by S&W.

Prices are good too. I ran through 100 rounds of .45ACP today and it cost me somthing just over $20.

DO NOT use lead bullets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
whatever you use lead bullets will clog the gas system and cause much trouble use plated bullets only

DITTO.

Just about any FMJ or copper plated bullets, and you will be fine.
I now prefer WW-296 powder, it gives a very pleasant recoil impulse, with lots of impressive muzzel flash. Muzzel flash just adds to the fun factor of the DE (that's why we have these toys).

Wolf has JHP only in ammo, im assuming thats acceptable.
No jacketed bullets for reloading though.

i did a quick check and it seems the ww296 load is a 24 gr charge for a 240 JHP bullet.

what works for you??

Even lead loads with gas checks will foul the system. Also beware of the UMC 180gr JSP, Your spend alot of time looking for your firing pin and spring (voice of experience here) I had the best results with PMC JSP. But next to impossible to get these days:(

just reload, the DE doesn't need to be cleaned anymore than any other gun out there. Like everyone says, no lead exposed base bullets as that will foul the gas system.

Winclean is just "clean" in the sense that your risk of lead exposure is reduced; the brass is also much cleaner after firing, but the gun itself still gets dirty ;)

If you are reloading, you want TMJ bullets :)

Clean the gun?

I don't shoot it enough so I have not cleaned mine for years.
Also don't use light bullets. I have used some 180 grain bullets but have had to load it hot in order to work reliably. Maybe someone has had different results than I have but I would say stick with 240 grain.

Maybe try lil gun or H4227 - I've found both to be much cleaner burning in my Ruger 44 Carbine than H110/W296.

Plus, both are both supposed to be much easier to ignite, for whatever that's worth

I used S&B. Comes in a red and green box. The DE is pick on which ammo it likes to use

I use the S&B nontox in my 9mm Tok and it is super clean...even more so IMHO then the Winclean stuff.

I am running with a 220 gr copper plated bullet with a moderate 22.8 gr of WW-296 up to a max of 25.7 gr of 296. Those particular charge weights because that's what my two largest RCBS Little Dandy charge rotors throw with WW-296.

Anyone have any pics they can post of their DE ammo? The reason I ask is because I want to see what some of these bullets look like. Do they have to be FMJ?

If you use unjacketed lead, the lead shavings will fill up the gas tube. Once the gas tube gets filled up, there's no way you can simply just melt it out or dissolve it with Hoppes #9. The gas tube will need to be redrilled all over again and that will cost a lot of time and money.

There's a list of ammunition MRI reccomends, lemme see if I can dig it up.

- Dave.
