Hi, i just received a scope from a trade, it is a burris fullfield 2, 6.5x20x50. ÀI have a .308 remington xcr tactical with leupold std mount and rings. The problem is, at the front of the scope, the front adjustment touch the barrel because it is too wide  , What can i do, shim the base? is there a way to do it yourself without buying ex: bushnell shim, etc? Also, what would be the cost of a weaver alternative?

Thank you very much for your help

No chance to shim?, it would just need 4-5mm, and as for base/ring, which would be the best for a rem700 and how much? Would the weaver #97+2 weaver rings from ebay (25mm or 30mm?) would be a good choice? should i get low or high rings?
thanks

You can use a couple strips of a plastic bottle or pop can to shim the rings. Do both front and back ring as it would damage the tube when you tighten them down. Uneven pressure on the tube. Do not shim the bases as they are ground to the radius of the action.

Just look into getting some taller STD rings. You don't need the base again just the rings.

Actually, i think one of the screw of the base is starting to fail (can't screw it pretty tight) So i thought why buy a set of rings around 30$ when i can have a weaver base (*97 for rem700) and 2 weaver rings 30mm on ebay, all of this for around 20$), anyone think my idea is bad for precision shooting (taking into consideration i don't shoot 600m and only .308 for recoil...)
Thinking of something like that: http: //cgi.ebay.ca/30mm-Double-Ring-Low-Scope-Mount-10mm-Rail-Weaver-/280522475423?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item415071479f#ht_3153wt_1137
Is it a good idea to take those kind of rings or better two separate rings?

Also, how can you know how many mm you need (mm high, so the scope don't touch the barrel anymore) anyone know how many mm the basic std leupold rings are?
Thank you very much

Unless tour Rem 700 has a 10mm dovetail rail, the mount you're looking at will not work. Spend the extra few dollars and get the right rings for your rifle. What you really need are some high or extra high rings. What height are the current rings you have? It should tell you on the package, or you can use calipers to measure from the top of the rail to the center of the ring. Remember that you need to be able to accommodate a 50mm objective, so you're probably going to need 0.950" rings, maybe more.

Going to a Weaver base and Weaver style rings isn't a bad idea. May I suggest you just take your gun, scope and the rings and mounts to your nearest gunshop? Your post doesn't inspire much confidence, and really it's a lot easier to sort out ring height at a counter with them all there.

I will wait to get my caliper to calculate which rings i would need (should arrive anytime soon ) So i just have to calculate from the top of the base to the center of the ring? (i need around 2-3mm so the scope fits ok) so i should get rings with 5mm taller than the setup i have now? Also, as for the confidence thing, i was just unsure about weaver rail on rifle, i have seen them mostly on AR, etc and didn't know if they were as good as "normal" rifle base,..

Thanks again

On the weaver chart (available on the weaver optics website) they have both... when i checked for pictures for one piece weaver base and my rifle on google image, they looked ok...

If you want strong and want to stretch your rifles legs some day I would suggest a 20 MOA 1 piece picatinny rail and some good solid rings. The setup will cost more than 30 bucks but you will not regret it. Here is a pic of a Leupold rail and Mark 4 rings on my 700 short action.

I put a B Square one piece base and Leupold PRW 30 mm rings on my Remington 700 to hold dowm my Vortex Viper 6.5-20X50mm and it works really nice. Buy decent stuff up front and you won't regret it.

I don't see the problem here. You already have a Leupold base. Buy a new set of rings. A 50mm objective simply needs higher rings that you currently have from your previous setup. I've had to buy new rings three times over the past year as I've bought different scopes with different needs.

Get a set of Burris signature rings. They'll fit standard Leupold bases, and, if you discover that you need more elevation, you can simply replace the ring inserts.

Your problem can quickly and easily be fixed for as little as 24.99 and up, and it will have been done correctly.
