Help choosing a .22

Yes, one of these threads. I'm looking for a .22lr bolt action repeater. Biggest problem is that I'm on a budget (hence the need for a .22lr). I need a general use rifle. Target, plink, and hunt. I come to the deduction of 2 possible choices:

Savage MkIIF: Heard a many good things.
WSS: $229.95
Frontier: $239.95
PD Ent.: $225.00
Epps: $215.13

Toz 78: heard it was very accurate and decent. Only downfall is lack of spare parts and scope mounting)
Kodiak: $199

As you can tell, I'm keeping a budget of around $200. Max is $250. Any other possibilities?

As a side note, I can't seem to decipher why semi-auto rimfires are cheaper than bolt action. And Cheaper by hundreds of dollars. As such, I'm leaning towards them. Particularly the Savage 64B ($170+), Marlin 795($180+), and Mossberg Plinkster($140+). I've heard bad things of the 597 and the 10/22 would be a devil in disguise for me (make me want to spend more than I'm willing to dish out at the moment).

Remington 581? Will look into.

It doesn't really have to be new. New is preferable though. I know there are Cooeys out there but they seem to be all bought up...
 
bolt rimfire

I know where there's a really clean Remington model 34 bolt action tube fed .22 repeater for sale on the EE. Real steel and walnut with a steel peep sight. Quality you won't find on a lot of newer guns. A little birdy tells me the price is dropping on it tomorrow when it gets BTT'ed. ;)

+1 on the CZ. They're worth the extra cost and it's something you only have to buy once.
 
Look after your rifle and don't get too bent out of shape over wear from normal use. A used CZ still looks better than a new Savage. You can probably save a few bucks if you can find a used one. It's not like its a $5000 rifle.

Honestly, I think that a lot of gunmakers today are selling cost-cutting measures as "features". They've managed to convince a lot of people that they can't take care of a traditional walnut and blued steel rifle.

I don't understand the whole "it's just a .22" school of thought. Most shooters probably run more rounds through their .22s than through their centrefires. Why cheap out on the rifle that will see the highest round count?

Quality is remembered long after the purchase price is forgotten.
 
keep a watch on the EE forum of this site, good 22's come up quite often and most times they are priced right. Do your "homework" and be cautious of folks trying to sell you a used rifle at a price above the cost of new, I never could figure that one out?
 
I have nothing but good things to say about my Savage MK II. Super accurate. Looks ###y with a bipod. Can hold 10 rounds. Just remember that you should be buying a scope that probably costs at least half as much as your gun will. Don't cheap out on the scope.

The only semi legitimate reason I can think of why semi's are so much cheaper than bolts is that (and I'm not sure about this) the bolt might be a little more expensive to manufacture. On a semi there usually isn't anything that's precision with the bolt. Other than that I think you are pretty much paying for accuracy.
 
Ah screw it. I'll bite on the Savage MkII. CZ 452/453 look amazing but I'll give the go to support the most Canadian company out there. Let my nationalistic pride make the choice :p
