Hi. I am new to shooting and was wondering if you guys had any advice to offer as to what rifle platform I should dump my hard earned money into instead of buying something nice for the wife. I'm looking at either a Tavor, an AR variant, or a VZ. 58. What I'm looking for is something reliable (aren't we all?), reasonable accuracy at 100-300 yards, the ability to mount optics and hopefully something not too expensive to buy extra parts, accessories and magazines for. I am willing to put in a lot of money as I plan to invest and train with the platform over a long period of time. I am going to eventually be buying a MOLLE vest so the cost/availability of mag pouches is a factor. I would prefer single point sling but I'm aware this might be difficult with the NR VZ. as I am only 5'8". Also can anybody give me a general sense of the size and weight constraints of each rifle? I don't plan on hunting with the rifle just a lot of target practice. As for NR vs Restricted I would prefer NR but its not a deal-breaker for me as I eventually plan on adding a handgun to the system. And as an added bonus if the rifle has a similar .22LR caliber rifle that I could use to train with as well that would be awesome.

Thanks for your help.

FTU?

Ya i handled T97, didnt like the ergo. Does it get any easier with practice? Hows accuracy?

It is a simple and reliable design. It's basically an unholy union of the AK and VZ on the inside.
Releasing the mag isn't that big a deal once you get used to it. Position of the safety is awful. Accuracy is meh, 3-4" at 100 depending on ammo. M855 gave me closer to 5-6". I think that's mainly attributable to the poorly designed iron sights. Short sight radius, big fat front post, front post is adjustable so that it sits in the hood off-center, which makes for a confusing sight picture.

I will say this though: Weight balance is excellent. Very compact, very pointable, effortless to keep held in a ready position for extended periods, but still gives you a nice long barrel to get .223 up to optimal velocities. It's probably the worst bullpup out there but it sold me on the bullpup concept.

If you've got the scratch get a Tavor, I know I'm shopping around for one now. If only people would answer their PMs!

Well I don't have experience with the tavor or the vz58 but have had a few AR's
Your price range of up to 1300 eliminates the tavor.
As for parts availability, pouches etc the ar will be your best bet.
your price point is that including optics?

I would look at a core15 or Windham or use the EE. The ones I've handled were very nice. I would go bare bones until you have decided exactly what kit you want to run.

Just my suggestions

I was only looking at the Tavor because of size and NR. No that price is not including optics, I'll add those on as I get a better idea from using the rifle.

Had an AR, Loved it, but because it was restricted I got annoyed, sold it and now own a Tavor :) Best decision ive ever made

Havnt gone for Accuracy yet, It's a battle rifle. Zeroed her last week and hit a Binary Target first shot with a reflex optic at 50 yards, accurate enough for me!

I would look at the vz58. Reasonably accurate, available in NR or R. Ammo can be had for about 18 cents a piece, and has enough knock down power for white tails if you hunt deer.

If you want an AR, I think SFRC has plenty of Windhams on sale at the moment, all cheaper than a vz58 in 223 or 762x39.

Forget the single point sling, get a BFG Vickers from One Shot, that way you won't sack yourself in the nuts when you blow it on transitions and positional changes. There's no substitute for a good AR, restricted or otherwise it's the best rifle of its type. Put an Aimpoint on it and maybe a flashlight, buy a metric buttload of ammo and run it like a 2 dollar hooker.

H&k sl-8 in .223 shooting 62grain and heavier... Like a lazer beam....... And the best of German engineering.... Buy the good stuff once and never look back!!!!!!!!

With this mentality in mind, I would suggest the ACR with a Herron Arms Non-Restricted barrel conversion. I just took ownership and I am highly impressed with the accuracy it has demonstrated with randow bulk Federal .223 55gr I purchased for $0.36 a round 2 years ago.

Banging steel fullsize IPSC targets at 400+ with my Elcan Specter DR 1-4x and a 10" gong at 250 with ease, no rest just droping prone in the dirt.

How much did that run you and where is a good place to get one?

I traded a Tavor and a number of Tavor related items to get this thing. The only way to get one is buy used on the ee for approx $3500 with no scope/accessories at that price or buy a used or brand new restricted model and send it to Herron Arms in Ontario to get it rebarreled from 16" to 18.6" and un registered.

Probably one of the pricy-est black rifles on the market, but its as close in performance and ergonomics as one can get in a Non-restricted fashion. It is fairly nose heavy though due to the quick change barrel system. I was skeptical I would like it at first, but after sighting it in and smacking steel with ease I was sold. Unfortunatly I am not just a Tavor fanboy any more.
