Hey guys
i would like some opinions here. i am looking to pick up a pistol, i like the .40 so im leaning towards that caliber.
im only wanting to spend about 650.
i am able to get a springfield XD 40 Tactical and i have the edge on a SW MP40 for that price. any other suggestions? or opinions on those 2 guns? reliability quality warranty? all questions id like to have answered before i make the fall!
thanks guys!

I'm not a huge plastic pistol fan but of those two I'd prefer the XD. I like the feature set and appearance better then the MP and the grip feel. The latter however is subjective so you might be best off trying both if possible and seeing which you prefer.

In .40 I would personally look at an STI or SIG but that may be reaching too far out of your budget.

the Grip option on the M&P persuaded me

after choosing the M&P, I upgraded to the H&K - now I have both, but I should have just purchased the H&K... 2cents

I have shot both and for the novice shooter that I am they shot equally as well. I went with the XD for the way it felt, its looks, its feature set and because every review or forum I went to I couldn't find a complaint other than from glockers. On the other hand I found many issues with the M&P maybe it was early versions but it made me nervous. As you can probably already tell I purchased the XD and don't regret it.

Having had both, I prefer the M&P
I didn't like the way the XD felt in my hand
The XD would hit my thumb joint each time I fired unless I kept my thumb low
1911s are still my prefered hand gun

If this is going to be your first pistol, take your time. Here's a tip - go to your home range and ask other shooters who have your two choices, if you could handle/shoot them. Most shooters are a fraternity that's always willing to help others, newbies and oldies alike. Nothing better than actually firing what you want to buy and seeing how each will feel in your hands.
Suggest you consider expanding your horizons and try others too. With your $650 budget, there are, on the EE, affordable used Glocks, CZ's, Taurus', Norinco's (Sig 226 knock offs in .40) etc.....
Happy hunting and post what you end up with.

I cant comment on those choices, but i am really liking my Glock 17. You could probably get a Glock 22/23/24/27/35 for around that price. Especially on the EE here. Im not sure which of those models are Canada legal. The 22 is probably the most common of them though.

it all depends on your own anatomy. Rottboy gave great advice. You will need to handle them both and if you can shoot them both or others before buying, every gun naturally points for everyone, just some point naturally in the wrong direction others in the right direction and you will only know when you try them out. Pretty well all pistols made and sold now days are quality guns and you won't be wasting your money on any of them but you will have a lot more fun shooting what FITS you best!!!!!

hey guys thanks for all the advice. i already own a 9mm, ruger new Vaquero and a hipoint.40. i like the .40 but the hipoint is a little to big grip/frame wise for me i have felt both the mp and the xd aswell as a glock22. all are nice but i find i dont feel "natural" with the way the glock sits in my hand. i loved the MP as soon as they came out but like mentioned i have heard its plagued with problems... however is it easier to get your smith fixed seeing as the service center is in BC then... um springfield getting parts from croatia?
v29891 what HK did you end up with?

where are you located?

Try to go to a range with rentals or ask your buddys at your range to try different guns.

My first pistol was a SW Sigma 40F, what a POS. I pretty much walked into a shop and bought it cuz it was a cheap police surplus, and back then glocks were $1200 and I couldnt afford the real deal. Then a FN P45 through online order after reading gun blast and several other biased internet articles, another big mistake!! I only got to try a Sig P226 a few months ago. Needless to say after shooting one at a local indoor range, I was convinced that Sigs were the gun for me. I actually managed to shoot it accurately, feels great in the hand and it was pure joy to shoot and looks ###y as hell.

I wish I had ponied up the coin to get a Sig from the beginning. Do me a favor and try one before you buy the other handguns. There are great deals on used ones in the EE, and you can always save up more cash in the meantime too:)

My wife used her M&P in IPSC and no problems
I have heard of a few guys having problems getting parts for XDs
But then we are in Canada

Warranty work on the S&W is available at M.D. Charlton.

I am unaware of any warranty station for Springfield Armory in Canada. Springfield has neither returned my emails nor returned my phone calls.

i already have a .40 and i enjoy the caliber.
i live in lethbridge and the closest range with trial guns in Calgary, but im not sure where to find said pistols.
what about a CZ 75b? a gentleman is selling his for 650.

you won't get a more accurate pistol for the price.... period. CZ's are underated, slide rides on the inside of the frame rails rather than outside, very very very good pistol.
