help choosing my first

what would be a good handgun for a rookie to start off with? i'm looking for something that is easy to use with a relatively low price, easy maintenance, and cheap ammo. i figure a 9mm semi auto of some sort would be good, but i haven't a clue if it's a good choice or where to begin with brands and models.

it's finally time to get that restricted and join a club...

Try a few at the club (assume you can hire) and see what you like, i tried 9mm,40 and 45 and went for the 45.

You dont want to spend the money and find out later you dont like the cal.
 
Your choice of a 9mm is the right one for sure, comparitively little recoil and the price of ammo cant be beat. If cost is a primary concern, look closely at the Rugar SR9, I have one that I got for my wife and its been great. If your wallet is a little thicker then a Glock 17 is a good choice as well. Look through the EE and you can see what some types are going for and maybe you'll see something you like. Its a good idea to hold a few to see what fits your hand so dont be afraid to go to a range and ask around or hit a gun store and just tell them you are shopping around and wanna hold a few. Most people will be happy to do show and tell.

My recommendation is still the SR9
 
Think you're making the right choice with 9mm given ammo prices, but as for choices, there are tons.

Take a look at the Jericho 941. I just recomended this to a friend. All steel and good value for money. You might have a problem finding accessories but if your just getting started you'll have lots of time to hunt them down if you find you need them.

But again (you'll hear this a lot) you'll have to shoot or at very least hold various pistols to make an informed decision. everyone prefers something different and there's a huge difference between shooting/holding something and drooling over gallery pics on the internet.

My advice.. Buy what catches your fancy.. There are lots of great 9mm handguns out there.. I would just look for something when you see it you just "gotta have it". If you do that you will be happy with it..

If you want to get into competitive shooting then you need to research the guns that are used in the discipline you are interested in.. Need to think about reliability, accuracy, serviceability, etc... But if you want to Plink.. its the "gotta have it" purchase..

I'd go with a good reliable pistol from a reputable brand. There are a lot of make/models to choose from; pistols are like shoes, gotta pick one you're confortable with and which points naturally. Handle as much pistol as you can before commiting to a specific model.

If you ask 20 persons you'll have 20 opinions: Glock 17, SIG P226, CZ 75b, S&W M&P9, H&K USP or Beretta 92; they're all good. It's only a matter of if it's good for you :)

I second that! Awesome pistol at a good price! BTW it can take +P ammo too!
 
IF THERE'S NO STICKIES ON THIS, there SHOULD BE- this is yet ANOTHER question that gets ASKED EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS- and we get 40k responses- if there is a sticky , READ IT- if there isn't , a 357 revolver SHOULD be your first choice- then you can fart around with the 9mm- you learn NOTHING by spray and pray
 
Since no one else has said it, get a 1911
there are a ton of brands out there and lots of 45 ammo. The Sam 1911 is a good deal right now. 45 ammo is expensive, but if you like 9 get it in 9.
