Hi,

I have a fairly accurate load developed for my .243win using H-414 and 100gn bullet,
unfortunately I'm out of the above mentioned powder and can't find it
anywhere locally.

Only available powders I have is Varget, and the H-4895.

Which of these would be best suitable for the .243win pushing a 100gn bullet?

Thanks.

Since the burning rate of Varget and H4895 is not a lot different, either powder will do the job.

You can expect slightly slower bullet speeds at max loads, but it will still be just fine.

Regards, Dave.

Yep, those two are very close except in burn rates. Max velocities are 20 fps higher with the Varget. Not enough to notice. Varget is quite a bit slower burning too. Number 100 on the Chart vs 88 for the H4895. Toss a coin.
Been using IMR4350 with 105's for eons myself.

Thank you for all the suggestions.

I was asking the question because, as I was goggling for a suitable replacement for the H414,
the general opinion was that Varget and H4895 is too fast burning for the 100gn bullet.

I could get the XMR-2700 (accurate), burning rate is closer to H414 than what I have right now.
I just don't want to waste powder to work up a load and not use it again.

Any thoughts?

Actually, The XMR2700 [formerly AA2700] is very close in burning rate to H414/W760. It is also a spherical powder, so may suit your needs well.

Thank you for the help.
I'll try and get the XMR2700, and if I can't, I will use the varget.
It seems like varget has a solver burning rate than the H4895.

i use imr 7828 for my 100 grain load .shoots accurate enough for hunting .

I was messing around one day and tried 7828 for 100 grain 243 loads. I was very surprised because it was incredibly accurate. The 243 really likes slow powder. I also tried R-25 just for kicks but it seemed to be too slow. Made a lot of soot on the cases and wasn't very accurate.

I too, would say that H414 is a little fast for a 100 grain bullet. H414 is really good for bullets in the 70/75 grain range, where it is very accurate and gives high velocity.
For 100 grain bullets in a 243 the best powders are in the range of 4350, Norma 204 or Norma 205 and similar.

...i used to use h414 but now i use h4831 with fine results ...and i use it in a pile of other cartridges as well ...someone correct me but i though i read that h414 is not suited to extreme cold (might affect its performance?) ...some years up here deer season has been -30 ...but then my performance isn't what it should be at -30 either! :)
