I have access to a CNC HD plasma, so I am working on making the perfect steel target, if anyone has any modification suggestions please share. This is my preliminary design.
Usage 600-1000+ yards

Material Surface Hardness is 500+ brinell. (.75” thick)

I can cut lots so if any of you guys want one let me know, shipping will be the killer.

OP, you are trying to link to an image on your personal computer. You need to upload the image file to an online photo hosting service such as Photobucket, then link to that location.

I think there is a sticky in the newbie forum on how to post photos.

I have a 15" ~ 1/4" thick peice of Titanium that makes a hell of a ringing sound when you shoot it.

Sparks are a nice hot bright white but catchs the grass on fire and that material is expensive

cant comment on price just yet but it will be reasonable.

Im trying to firm up on a design, primarily looking for feedback now, and yes i realize this will work but if anyone has a better idea or way to hang them or change the holes ~ whatever ~ I’d love to hear an explanation why and see if it makes sense.

Given the range you plan on using them at, my recommendation would be to make them thinner. 3/4" steel gets pretty heavy, and past a couple hundred meters 3/8" AR500 is more than adequate to stop normal bullets without deformation. Maybe go to 1/2" if you feel the need.

What about a round one with the center cut out and a insert in the hole on a spring hinge (mounted on the back so it dosen't get shot) so that when you shoot it in the center it swings open then resets. Just an idea...

You can also directly insert a photo into your post, inline.

From the photobucket page you link to, go and get the "Direct Link" on the right hand side (it'll put http://i1086.photobucket.com/albums/j441/MattMoser/Gong15inch.jpg into your paste buffer). Then when you are composing or editing a post, have a look three icons to the right of "insert URL", where you'll find the "insert image" icon that looks like a postcard of a mountain scene; that'll make URLs to photos show up inline, like this:

Daniel,

You are a good man!

Thanks!

second thought: if there's a way to shape it so that it makes a better ring when you hit it, (ie: louder) that'd be awsome.

i think a piece of steel ( ring) around the outside of the back the gong would contribute to a louder sound or just around the outside of the front. This would possibly channel the vibrations and the sound back toward the user.... something like this :

maybe the op wants to try something like this out?

I will post picks of mine I made later tonight. Very similar to yours my holes are further apart. I also done have the tap portion on top of mine like you do. I added some "ears" to hang them from chains. I also went with 3/8" QT400 I have shot it at 100 yards (I know that's a little close but I wanted to see how it will stand up) with a .308 168gr SMK and it did not crater. I made mine 12" and 6" in diameter.

Something light would be easier to transport, ring better, and require a smaller gauge frame. 3/4" Steel is waaay too heavy. Out of curiosity how much would the titanium plate of that size be? How does it hold up to heavy use?
