Hi guys, equiped myself to reload a year ago or so but was out of the game lacking time and space. Now I just changed my rifle and would like some input to help me develop a good recipe for it.

Rifle: Savage 10TR .308 24 inches barrel 1/10 twist

What I have laying around

Alliant powder 2000-MR
CCI 200 Primers
Federal Brass
Nosler 175gr HPBT BULLET CUSTOM

I know each rifle likes different recipe but I'd like some of you guys to chime in as a starting load / OAL and so on.

Also feel free to share if you know better powders and so on.

I know my brass sucks.. but I have them laying around so I'll use them till I break them.

The 308 Load Map at this link. It has lots of potential loads to try. Start with the powder charge lower however. A possible good choice may be:

Hodgdon Varget powder
CCI BR2 primer
Sierra 175 grain MatchKing

anyone tried that ALLIANT 2000 MR before I throw it out ? Looks like Varget is what people use

Bueller, anyone?

Before someone suggests a 260 AI or a Ford truck, why not use the components you have in the 45.7-47.7 gr range in 0.2 gr increments at an OAL of 2.800".

No-one can suggest anything precise that will work in your gun like it did in theirs.

Bueller ? don't get that.

And yes, I know no-one can suggest anything precise for my gun, what I'm looking for was more of a starting point from experienced reloaders than anything.

Your powder, primers, brass and bullets are excellent for making good ammo.

That powder will work best at the hotter end of the spectrum - but some rifles are "hotter" (tighter) than others, so do a standard work up and see what groups best.

If it was my rifle, I would load 46.0 to 48.0 in 0.5 gr increments, 5 of each. I would shoot them for group off a bench and see what works best. If you get any extraction problem, stop shooting and bring the hot ammo home, to be pulled.

That powder is very good for 175 gr and heavier bullets. If you want to shoot lighter bullets, get Varget or RL15.

If you are looking for max accuracy, the Nosler and Sierra 175 match bullets are perfect.

Exactly the answer I was looking for ! Thanks I'll try just that.

I'll break in my new barrel with some off the shelf ammo I have laying around and then start from there with the reloads

Yes, my plan was to fire single shots 5 times and clean inbetween each of them and then 3 to 5 times a 5 shot group with cleaning inbetween each group.

Make sure you do these on the eve of a full moon, whilst the stars are aligned.....

.....just kidding.....sort of.

Either way, take a second beer with ya.

Oh, I know all about it.....

It's a pure matter of opinion, heresay, and completely lacking science.... Break ins, cleaning intervals, and how you hold your tongue whilst running the final swap down the bore.....

I haven't drank that coolaid, but many that I respect have, so I just poke a bit of fun and carry on....

You should do whatever helps you sleep well at night. I have enough sh!t in my head to keep me awake, my bore scrubbing schedule doesn't bother me.

I think I like your previous avatar over this one.

Haha I hear ya... I'm sceptical on the need of a break in, but I feel like it's easy done ''just to be sure'' and not regret not doing it in the long run.

If you fire 1 and clean three times you will be shocked at how much crap come out after just one shot. This is because of the rough bore.

Then fire 5 and clean. Again, very dirty.

Fire 5 or ten. Almost no crap. Barrel is now broken in.

Savage button rifled barrels need a break in.
