he everyone, i'm new to the forum and also a new owner of a brand new ruger 10/22 (stainless/synthetic). i've only put about 1500 rounds of varying makes through it. (still trying to find a round it really likes) the other day i showed up at the range and fired about 200 rounds of winchester xpert hp bulk from crappy tire (how i regret that) after those 200 rounds the accuracy, all of a sudden, went down the crapper. it felt like i was shooting a shotgun. the rounds were going absolutely all over tha place and noone at the range could explain what was going on. it really felt like something was radically wrong. i stopped shooting and went home to strip the rifle down and inspect the bore. upon inspection, i saw a HUGE obstruction about 2 inches from that breech. i tried to clear it with aa rod and a ton of solvent; i got an amazing about of lead pieces out of there but the obstruction is still there and is not going anywhere. it seems like something was stripping some of the lead off the bullets on thier way out. that would explain the erratic flight path i would think. and the ridiculous amounts of solid lead pieces somehow stuck to the inside of the bore. i'm just wondering about what to do and if anyone has any input or similar experiences it'd be much appreciated. thx a lot guyS!

You might have had squib load stuck in the barrel or there's damage in the barrel. Is there a slight bulge in the barrel? Rugers warranty is pretty good. Call them tomorrow and explain the matter to them. They might tell you to send it to the warrenty center out west.
Photo copy your bill and send it along. If you bought the gun from a gun dealer, they should be able to send out for warranty repair for you with no charge to you. Don't fret, it happens to all of us sooner or later. My Ruger P94 had a defective barrel from the factory.

As far as I know it always happened on newly crappy 10-22. On the other hand mine only took Remy Thunder bolt. A little dirty but she liked.
One word " sell it quick or the put more money into it.

So you can't get a rod through the barrel at all? If so, I think I'd take it to a gunsmith. You could try tapping a wooden dowel to remove the obstruction.
Usually a brass brush and solvent will remove lead. Worst case, the lead removal patches are supposed to work well.

thx a lot guys, i'm taking the damn thing to the gunshop i got it from (in waterloo) today. hopefully they'll tell me if the barrel really is defective or what. but then again, these guy told me not to clean the gun, ever, when i bought it. i thought that sounded a little strange seeing as how we cleaned the barrels of our C7's till we could use them as drinking straws back in the army days. but oh no, not the .22, i should never ever clean the bore of a .22! ok i'm off to the store to see whats up and get a good quality cleaning kit. with a brush.

Sounds like mine. The first 5-600 rounds the leading in the barrel was insane. I could clean fingernail sized lead flakes out of the barrel.
Mine cured itself. All I did was shoot about 1000rds of high velocity copperwashed bullets and all is fine now.

ok, back from the gunshop, problem solved. the guy spent about half an hour getting all the lead out and was shocked by the amount that came out. his explanation was that i used crappy ammo. i guess that contributed to the problem...anyway, i won't be using any of the canadian tire bulk crap anymore.(winchester "xpert") i picked up a brick of pmc zappers, hopefully it likes them, if not i'll just stick to thunderbolts, as it seems to like them well enough. the guy said i was lucky that the barrles didnt get damaged. he thought i'd need a new barrel after what he pulled out of it. but all is well now and i'm off to the range to give a her a go. once again, thx everyone
Winchester Xpert is not that crap and I use them with very good result for my Win 67A bolt action. But lead bullet seems more easy to build up lead inside the barrel. You may want to switch to copper plate.

Serbian - I'm curious - for any rounds that actually hit the paper, were the holes oblong (i.e. were your rounds flying parabellum (end-over-end) and hitting the target broadside)? In a .22, this seems to be a pretty good indicator of the early stages of a barrel obstruction (assuming you're still hitting paper). I had a friend who had a similar sounding barrel obstruction in his .22 - it came on rapidly with symptoms of inaccuracy and much 'larger' holes (he couldn't figure out how he was getting such tight groupings - lol). When we figured out he had a huge chunk of lead stuck to the inside of his barrel, we suspected he either 'cleared' a previous squib round that he hadn't noticed while rapid firing (easy enough to do with a .22), or that it was just the crappy cheap ammo he was shooting breaking up and/or leading up the rifling. Anyhow - my point - he cleaned the crap out of his barrel (we're also familiar with C7's), but he still gets the problem every time he shoots - there was either permanent damage -or- it was due to some pre-existing issue with the barrel. If you're getting offers of a replacement barrel on here for the cost of shipping I'd go for it and save the cleaning kit for the new one. If you're concerned about damaging the 'fragile' rifling in your .22, try a bore snake - they're great.

hey greyrc, when the problem originally occured, i wasn't even hitting the paper. i mean, every ound was a flyer; 2 feet to the right, 3 feet up, one foot down...you get the point. it really turned out to be an amazing amount of lead stuck to the bore that caused all the bullets to be torn up as they left the barrel. i couldn't get all the lead out, but the guy at the shop did it. and i was lucky enough not to have any permanent damage done to the bore. so now, i don't buy bulk ammo anymore and i dont go crazy with those 25 round banana mags (as tempting as it is to squeeze off all 25 in rapid succession). the gun is shooting fine now and i'm happy. and i think i might go ahead and pick up one of those bore snakes.
