Lookin for a short and sturdy bolt action in either 22 mag or 17 hmr.
its gonna be an all around walking around meat getter/varmint rig ( bunnys, racoons,hogs and bobcats coyotes)
Id like this to be an heirloom for my kids so id prefer a wood stock.
The bush is pretty thick where ill be, so iron sights are more important that rails.
I like savage ( the todd landry edition is pretty sick) and marlin. i dont like the new ruger american cuz of the flip up rear sight.
i like the adjustable sights on a 597 but dont trust a semi vs a pissed off hog.
I saw a video online bout a marlin m25 trail boss but cant find one anywhere.
just want something short......16 - 18" barrell.

Obviously not wood but it takes the same stock/scope mounts as savage mark II so go crazy with boyds etc...
 
Yep Stevens 305 Trapper is .22 WMR and 300 Trapper is .22lr .

I have the 300 and I love it. That's a picture of the 300 I believe but it looks identical except the mag is a little bigger.
 
Not sure why heirlooms have to be wood? Especially if it's going to see lots of use, get something you can put a good b and c or mcmillan on at some point, replace the wood stock and put it on the shelf so it stays pretty.
 
"Heirloom" quality would disqualify the Savage and (most) Marlin rimfires made today, but that's my opinion. If by that..you mostly mean you want it to survive long enough to pass down, then if you take care with most rimfires made today, you should be fine. Entry-level Savages/Marlins don't have nice sights...in fact, I don't think any of their rimfire guns do. I would have actually suggested a Ruger American Compact .22WMR for a nice combination of weight, price, synthetic stock, good sights (folding wouldn't matter to me, but your call)...but it doesn't sound like you want one of those. However, that would be my second choice...a CZ LUX model would be my first. Wood stock, good iron sights, great built quality, and a gun you'd be proud to pass down. Here is a CGN sponsor's post, 9th rifle down is a 22WMR. In thick bush, with med. size game, I'd say 22WMR is better than 17HMR any day of the week.

They're not overly large, or heavy rifles...but built WAY better than anything Savage. Most Marlins too~as much as I like Marlins.
 
I'll partially agree with the above, instead though, I'd say the savage doesn't qualify for heirloom aesthetics, find a CZ, or a lever Henry or Winchester.

If you you are planning to eat what you shoot then you definitely don't want to get 17hmr. 22LRGUY nailed it. 452 LUX in 22 wmr.... or may I suggest a 452 Scout in 22LR (more affordable for the family outings).

Has age Landry editions are #### bought one took it back 3 times
All three times the gun was replaced
All three times I brought home a new gun with a different manufacturers defect
Took it back again told them to keep it

Rear sights are easily replaceable with one you like. Plastic stocks are replaceable with wooden stocks.

Another vote for a cz though
