Hello guys, I got one of those DLASK 80% lowers a while back and I now understand that I don't have the tools or skills to finish it.
Since I would like to build a new AR I thought I could hear how you guys did it.
Thanks !

If you gotta ask....

I suggest you buy a built one instead. Otherwise enjoy your paperweight.

I've said before, ask exactly what needs to be done before you buy one. Most if not all need to have the hole for the buffer tube tapped. If you don't have access to a tap it's about $60 right off the start. Most of the ones i have seen require the internals milled too, so that means access to a machine shop. If you have to buy a jig to drill the holes for the fire control group, that is yet more money. And then you either have to paint or anodise it. Anodisers have a minimum charge, mine charges $120. One lower costs $120 and 3 costs $120. And then you have to submit the pictures and get an frt and THEN register it. So it doesn't sound like such a good deal anymore. Then if you go to sell it, you are selling a homemade lower.

Google CNC Gunsmithing. They have all of the tools and information you will ever need for the 80%. Take your time, have fun and if you know a machinist get some tips from him or her. I am not handy with tools but this approach does work.

im lost...

i still dont understand why someone would want to pay more for an 80% lower rather than paying less for a 100% stripped lower?

am i missing something?

Make a visit to AR-15 and watch the videos, then make an assessment as to where you are in the project and if you have the skills to finish. If not, you then need to make an assessment whether it would be cheaper to buy a complete unit or buy the pieces and have a gunsmith put it together for you.

Yeah, really. Dlasks prices have changed, it used to be $20 cheaper for the 80% lower, now its more expensive....never mind all the machining and paperwork, you still have to park the thing. Its just not cost effective to do it yourself, especially when he'll make you custom serial numbers etc.

Just dont get it.

Yes you are missing something. The 80% lower is not registered, not recorded anywhere. When they come to take your AR once the Lieberals get back in or when the Conservatives sell us out even further, all you give them is the registered part. All the other parts are just pieces of metal. So you still have your 80% lower and ALL the other parts. Get it now?

Because it's FUNNNNN! :dancingbanana:That's why!
Where's your sense of adventure? It's like alot of things. You can buy a tailor made cheaper, or if you enjoy it and are mechanically inclined, you can build your own.
True, it's not for the faint of heart though. :D

ummmm no...

the 80% part isnt usable until you get the tools to mill and drill out the receiver, etc.. so that it can accept a lower parts kit, stock, etc... at the point where you finish that last 20% you have a STRIPPED LOWER which is legally considered a firearm and you then have to go through the hassles of verifying it, getting issued an FRT and getting it REGISTERED.

The 80% receiver isnt registered because it cant do anything! you can have the upper complete, LPK, stock and everything ready to go, but until that lower is completed it is literally a hunk of metal.

Now if you're suggesting that keeping an 80% lower around just in case the AR gets banned, prohibited, confiscated....what are you going to do with it then? completing the lower at that point is creating a prohibited device..which i dont have to tell ya is ILLEGAL.

Now for the guys that say its a fun project, I can see that side of it...as long as you have the tools or are willing to shell out the cash to finish it. My reasoning is by the time u get the lower finished, you could have bought and imported a nice noveske or larue for the same price. i do get your points though!

I think a lot of people buy the 80% lowers because they think "ha ha I'm going to have an unregistered lower" then once they get it realize that it's a little more complicated than that (I am not implying that the OP had that in mind).

To the OP: What 20% isn't completed on your 80% lower? I've made a couple lowers from solid chunks of aluminum (yes, they're registered) and can tell you exactly how hard it's going to be to complete whatever steps you need to complete.

cncguns is your BEST resource for making your own lower but as has been stated previously, don't think you're going to make one cheaper than what you can buy it for.
