Sorry for another help with purchase thread, I think I have an idea of what I want just need some opinions to steer me. I'm a milsurp guy. I love LE's and Garands. But I want to try something else that will better my shooting. I've been shooting around 300m with both Garand and Lee Enfield No4's. I can hold alright from my elbows with either, my scoped No4 obviously is easiest. That being said I want a modern, long range capable rifle for targets up to 800m(all the space available) and for coyotes. Bonus for me is that I can shoot coyotes off my Dad's back porch out to 600m so no lugging a heavy target rifle (like that matters I stalk with a Garand in the fall). I'm really interested in a 223. I love the classic look of a Remmington 700, but I want quality over foo foo garbage. My budget will be under $1500. I want a bipod and capable optics. What about barrel twist and length? Being all my rifles are old, I've never had a choice and have never looked into it. Heavy bullets need faster twist? Will a faster twist work ok for plinking dogs with game bullets? I also reload if that makes a difference in your advice. Given my lack of experience I understand that all the available rifles can definitely outshoot me. Question is what combo will work well for what I want to do?
Here's what I've been looking at so far, and if I sound like I'm clueless its because I am or I wouldn't be here asking.
Savage Model 12
Rem M700 SPS Tac or VTR
Tika T3 or Master Sporter.
What do you guys think? Am I on the right track and given my budget and lack of knowledge where would you start?
Also what am I looking for in longer ranged optics and also bipods, stock etc.
I don't own a firearm newer than 1955 so ya...ha ha!
