Sorry for another help with purchase thread, I think I have an idea of what I want just need some opinions to steer me. I'm a milsurp guy. I love LE's and Garands. But I want to try something else that will better my shooting. I've been shooting around 300m with both Garand and Lee Enfield No4's. I can hold alright from my elbows with either, my scoped No4 obviously is easiest. That being said I want a modern, long range capable rifle for targets up to 800m(all the space available) and for coyotes. Bonus for me is that I can shoot coyotes off my Dad's back porch out to 600m so no lugging a heavy target rifle (like that matters I stalk with a Garand in the fall). I'm really interested in a 223. I love the classic look of a Remmington 700, but I want quality over foo foo garbage. My budget will be under $1500. I want a bipod and capable optics. What about barrel twist and length? Being all my rifles are old, I've never had a choice and have never looked into it. Heavy bullets need faster twist? Will a faster twist work ok for plinking dogs with game bullets? I also reload if that makes a difference in your advice. Given my lack of experience I understand that all the available rifles can definitely outshoot me. Question is what combo will work well for what I want to do?

Here's what I've been looking at so far, and if I sound like I'm clueless its because I am or I wouldn't be here asking.

Savage Model 12
Rem M700 SPS Tac or VTR
Tika T3 or Master Sporter.

What do you guys think? Am I on the right track and given my budget and lack of knowledge where would you start?

Also what am I looking for in longer ranged optics and also bipods, stock etc.

I don't own a firearm newer than 1955 so ya...ha ha!

since you like milsurps, have you checked at the swedes mausers in 6.5x55
I am presently building a target rifle out of one, and yet I am satisfied
I coud do 3/4 moa 3 shots groups with a factory m38 barrel
now I am waiting for a ney set of dies to see what is the best I get get out of it

is your budget of under 1500 including glass??

i have a modle 12 LRPV from savage, with 75gn amax and 77gn SMK it is a legit sub .5MOA rifle , 26"barrel and 1:7 twist down side is they come in around 1200 which would pretty much be your whole budget.

any tika i have ever owned or shot have always been MOA or better from the box so also very good choice

Yes unfortunately $1500 is for the whole package right now. If a clear winner pokes up I may buy just the rifle for now n hope my wife is good to me at Christmas!

What's different between a regular model 12 and the LRPV besides the twist?

the LRPV is avaiil in duel port or left port only, single shot. other then that is just a model 12 variant, sort of like how there is like a billion versions of the remington 700

I'm starting to lean towards a Tikka T3 Varmint or the Savage Model 12. Anyone want to change my mind?

How about your thoughts on optics for one of these little guys?

Lots of great used optics in the EE forum right now, just look for it. For the distance you said, you will a 4-12 as a minimum, with a 4-16 or 6-24 even better. Watch for internal elevation and windage limits, making sure you have enough to get you to where you want to be, or you wil have to add a sloped base.

Good luck with your project!

Also don't cheap out on rings, nothing worse then having a nice setup that dosen't shoot well because of the extra $50 you diden't spend on the rings and base.

My first was a Savage Model 10 FP, .223 1:9 twist, 24" barrel, bipod stud, accutrigger, out of the box accurate as hell. I found a load of 24.2 gr Varget pushing 77 gr SMK's. .25 MOA all day long. It's a bit heavy due to the heavy barrel, but it sounds like most of your shooting is going to be done from a deck, so lugging the thing around won't be a drag (10 lbs I think it was). If you go with a Savage, you should have enough money left for a 20 MOA rail and a decent scope, good rings, I like the Burris Tactical stuff, maybe a Harris bipod. Bushnell Elite 6-24 (new version has 90 MOA adjustment range), or even an Elite 3000 fixed 10X if the budget gets really tight, would fit the bill and not break your budget. Plus you can tweak the Savage (as well as any Remington) with after market upgrades and changes if you want later.

Just my last thoughts. Any Tikka's I ever saw were over $1000 just for the rifle... you still need the other gear.

If you shoot from the porch you can save money for the moment by not buying a tripod and just using a bag of sand. It would be an extra $100.00 towards better glass for the Savage. (Yeah, I'm a bit biased here).

Savages seem to have an awesome following. I think you guys have made up my mind for me! I'll know for sure if I can do it in a few days, I'll keep you guys posted...

love the remmy in .223 with a nikon M223 scope on it. If you shoot the 55gr out of it it has adjustment out to 600yrd with just a turn of the turret... Thats what Im getting as a next gun. No questions but then again i may be biased due to my current TAC AAC-SD lol

Ok so I wound up buying a very low round count Savage Model 12 FCV on the EE as a completed rifle with a Elite Tactical 5-15x40 and bipod on it. Really excited to try it out! Its coming across the country so I'm stocking up on reloading gear and components while I wait. Did I make a good choice?

For now I've picked up a box of fusion 62g factory ammo to get acquainted with it. I'm going to start with 65g speers to learn with. Question I have now is for powder. Barrel is 26" 1 in 9. My favorite shop suggested ramshot TAC. I bought a pound of it and I also have H4895 from my Garand and LE's. How well should tyhe TAC work and do you guys have other powder suggestions?

Well here it is!

Super stoked to go try it out, but how the hell do you run this thing? Ha ha! Way more high tech than a Lee-Enfield that's for sure!
