Help for SOCOM M14 (M305)

Hi all, this is my first post,

I need the educated word of a few good men, to tell me if i would be doing a diservice to my Norinco M14, by modifiying it to a SOCOM version, with a GI fiberglass stock (i found some here in Canada, yes!!) I'm also thinking of getting a custom camo paint job done to the entire rifle, once again not sure about this either. My question is, will i be screwing up my rifle or am I turning it into an object of desire and function. Please give me some advice!! Thanks to you all who will respond.

Dont worry about screwing up a m14 as there are lots still around. Just dont bastardize it by trying to do some wild milling,drilling on it. Its meant to have fun with...If you want soccom and camo,shortened barrel,picatinny rail...give er and have at er...:dancingbanana: Thats what its all about...

Right now I am working on 3 different stocks for the good ol M14 s...first one is a snow camo job,second is another original stock done with about 30 coats of true oil and is gonna look real shiny,3rd one is well...I ground out the front sling swivel attatchment and filled it with wood and ground to fit the stock,fits real nice after bedding and sanding,now its on to fill the back sling stud also bedded in, then take a saw and cut off the excess bull#### wood for the recoil pad. Then fill in the holes for all the cleaning kit and such. after that its fill in the top rear of the stock where the buttpad would swivel up,grind that down and when all is said and done mount a new 1 inch pachmayer pad to it and grind that down to fit the stock....

Then..then..then....its getting painted candy apple brandy wine base clear by yours truly and I will post pics of it....

Have fun with it and if you have any questions just check out the main battle rifle thread...there are so many answers in there to questions it would make your head spin...
 
Just remember you can't cut the barrel under 18 1/2 inches or it's a prohib. I just went thru that and actually had it set up to cut before I remembered. I threaded and crowned the muzzle, made a copy of an SEI muzzle brake, parkerized the brake at home and it all looks excellant. I also bought a marine gas block front sight from Marstar (they actually had them in stock for once)
 
If you want to do it, yes! But stay legal. My opinion, and like noses everyone has one, is that short barrel full-power cartridge rifles are a waste. They kick like HELL, belch out needless fire and are often less accurate than a longer barrel rifle.

For the amount of money you spend on making it short, you can buy ammo and improve your own ability.

A cool paint job won't improve the accuracy. It will just make people say, 'look at that short barreled rifle. Why did he do that?'
 
ok!! not sure how to take a few of the coments, but that is what i asked for, feedback. Hey just so you guys know I ain't doing this myself, i found a place that does it professionaly so i don't think they will do something illegal. But i really want opinions here, accuracy differences, jamming, sighting in, stuff like that....will it make a big difference "IF" i go the SOCOM route, I have no real problem with just getting a nice paint job done to the fiberglass stock and replacement forend, maybe add a rail or 2, I just like the look of the SOCOM, and for home protection I know it would be a bit better being shorter, but i would rather my 12 for that anyway. Honest opinions guys!!
 
I suggest you swing over to the main battle rifle forum and try searching through the threads. Most of your questions will be answered and you will understand strange comments such as "your #### will fall off."

Welcome to the club!!! It is very easy to spend a lot of money building your ideal Norc M-14.
